Ought not has little to do with it. Love does not override citizenship laws in any country, as far as I'm aware. The closest I can think of are crimes of passion in France. Love doesn’t override citizenship laws but those laws, in any compassionate society, do acknowledge and try to accommodate it. If you have witnessed, as I have, the struggles, devotion and dedication that some have to go through just to achieve the fundamental right of being with the person they love, you might be more understanding and sympathetic.

The overwhelming majority of students are from the sub-continent where someone you love translates as arranged marriage. How about we allow people to come to the UK to do lower paid jobs without family and without any recourse to citizenship/ asylum etc. A proper guest worker system, we will than have a better idea of what jobs need to pay. If you don't want to come and work in the UK on those terms then fine, don't come. If for example, someone arrives in the UK at age 30 with a family of say one adult and two children of 5 and 7 and earns 40K a year, they will never pay enough tax and NIC to be anything other than a net recipient factoring in just NHS and education. Education per child is in the region of 5K per year for basic schooling . Edited by HKOwen (12 Dec 2023 5.44am) Edited by HKOwen (12 Dec 2023 5.44am) Edited by HKOwen (12 Dec 2023 9.45am)
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

There's nothing stopping people being in love. If the love is that strong I'm not sure that they absolutely have to live in the UK - surely in this "love conquers all" world you describe the country of residency is merely an aside.

They don’t and quite often with all the barriers they face living in their spouse’s country is what happens. However they are often barred from working there and the wages are lower anyway. If you have family at home it can be a wrench.

It seems that it’s more often women but it’s by no means exclusively as more and more ladies are travelling these days. That’s the world we live in now. It’s shrunk tremendously in my lifetime. It’s not going to change either so get used to it. Having travelled quite extensively myself I have found experiencing other cultures very rewarding and educational. People believe and behave in all kinds of different ways but they are also very alike in so many ways. So, whilst seeking to control illegal immigration and manage economic migration makes sense, I think social migration for family reasons is just a factor of the way we now live.

Just another brain dead ‘policy’ that has no chance of ever sticking Sunak has today announced he’s considering banning under 16s from using social media, which is yet another completely unworkable, unenforceable nonsense. The worst government I’ve ever seen.
