I read a report of the game that said Franca played well, completed a few dribbles but possibly looked a bit lightweight. Does that sound about right?

From the little I’ve seen of him, he does look lightweight, but I always remember when we first see this skinny little fella Ian Wright make his debut, we all thought he looks too lightweight……I’ll say no more

Yeah it's curious what happened there....Wasn't Nicky Butt from that era as well.

To go from academy graduates like that to basically what they have now is quite something. Obviously I don't follow them so don't know what went wrong.

I don't think anything did go wrong, they just had a bumper crop. In my memory no other club has ever replicated anything else even close.

Not all at at the same time, but Southampton felt like a production line for a few seasons, with everyone touting it as the new model to follow. But in reality that was a bit of a freak too.

A player every couple of seasons is the best you can hope for I think

I guess Chelsea is the only comparable club in recent years but their model seems to be more to sell than to develop for the 1st team.

Off the top of my head...

RB - Reece James, Lamptey
LB - Ian Maatsen
CB - Guehi, Tomori, Christensen,Chalobah
Mid - Mount, Gallagher, RLC, Gilmour, Hudson-Odoi, Boga
Striker - Abraham, Broja

Pretty impressive list, probably missed a few.

Basically, yes, although to be fair, most of the youngsters looked lightweight with even Ozoh finding it tough to outmuscle the opponent.

Franca did show some good skills but tried to do his tricky dribbles too often IMO and in the wrong moments. I sense he still thinks he has show his trickery to prove his worth. He needs to focus on how best to interact with his team mates and reserve his trickery for the right moments.

It was also much easier to do in the early/mid 90s - all 20 PL clubs now have international players and budgets to compete with nearly anyone in Europe which certainly wasn't the case then.

Agree a player everyone couple of seasons is realistic, and I think if we can have 3-5 of our squad places filled with academy graduates, that's a great outcome.

Good point, they are definitely the closest. And you could add Lewis Hall to that list too.

I'd love to know what their M.O. is sometimes.

Take Guehi for example, captained England at every level, looked great at Swansea. Have they decided at 20 odd that whilst he might go on to be a full international, he's not going to be good enough for them.

Or is the pathway to the first ream so choppy, that he's said he wants to be a prem starter and pushed through a move?

Levi Colwill as well.

It is quite a bizarre model - I have to say I don't really see the point in an academy if you produce a Guehi or a Mason Mount and can't find a path for them. They're about as good a standard a player as you can hope to regularly produce.

How much have they spent on centre halves since selling Guehi?

Fofana - £75m
Diassi - £40m
Badiashile - £35m
Koulibaly - £35m

Are any of those better than Guehi? Not for me.

I agree.

I was always under the impression Chelsea sought, procured and then sold as much 'young talent' as possible not to directly resource their own playing staff but to mitigate the reckless spending they wanted to employ in doing so.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Yeah it is mad.

I guess at least with Mount, and to a lesser extent RLC, Abraham, Gilmor etc they spent some time in/around the first team before being moved on.

Guehi decision was made so early. You would have thought that Guehi and Colwill would have been earmarked as a potential CB partnership for hte next decade!

As others have said adding Colwill and Hall to this list it's certainly the makings of a very strong team. But they chose to sell most of them and spend close to 1bn on quite a bit of dross. Strange.
