Not strictly true. Potter took most of his coaching team with him to Chelsea. Potter certainly managed well what Tony Bloom and Paul Barber gave him, but what de Zerbi is doing is a few legs up from Potter. At Chelsea, Potter was dismal. Id take Roy in a heart beat before Potter. Plus he is a sea weed.

None of us can say whether that would be the right decision unless and until it happens, but the pointers seem to indicate that this may well be the succession plan.
He appears to be more heavily involved in first team matters now with Roy referencing him on tactical decisions and McCarthy is also doing a bit more media.
It would be a tough baptism for him to start at Premier League level, but I suppose the club’s reasoning could be if it doesn’t work out in the first 10 games or so, there would still be time to make a change.
The gamble of bringing in a new manager without any knowledge of the club or players would also have its own risks so why not gamble with a manager who at least has this knowledge even if he hasn’t the experience?
From a personal point of view I would prefer a tried and tested manager - but certainly not Southgate.

Can not see how anyone wouldn’t know that is the truth of Palaces situation. If European competition was achieved the whole attitude toward squad size and quality would have to change. Not just because it could prove an embarrassing experience in that company if we didn’t, but more so because it’s very difficult to maintain a place in the Premier, and a run in Europe, even with an expanded squad. As we are it’s unthinkable.

Probably for the best in football, generally speaking.

Ironically, this season is the least worried I’ve been about Palace for some time. I have huge trust in Roy, we look pretty solid now, have Olise to return and Franca to feature surely, defence and midfield look settled and we have two quality keepers. Granted squad pretty thin but the likes of relegation not even featuring in my thoughts so the only thing to concern myself with is seeing how well we can do and god willing a cup run. Happy days as far as I’m concerned.
