Heavens to Betsy Mr Hodgson has been awarded a contract until the end of the current campaign, we have only played 5 games accordingly the season is in its infancy and there is already speculation about who will be handed the managerial 'Reins' when he departs ! Edited by Willo (08 Sep 2023 4.51pm) Agree, ridiculous. Plus, hypathetically speaking, imagine if Palace had an amazing season and sneaked into a Europa league spot. No one is going to begrudge Roy having another year so he can have one last crack at Europe. After all, it will have been him that got us there. He'd deserve the chance should it come up.

If we were to somehow do the impossible and get ourselves into a European competition this season I would seriously recommend we decline the invitation as we barely have enough players to field a Premier League side, let alone compete in another competition.

Think Potter would be great. De Zerbi getting enormous amounts of credit this reason, and rightly so, but he's building on a lot of the work that Potter put in. Southgate's biggest skill is squad harmony and togetherness rather than tactical acumen. Reckon he'd want a bigger job anyway. Not strictly true. Potter took most of his coaching team with him to Chelsea. Potter certainly managed well what Tony Bloom and Paul Barber gave him, but what de Zerbi is doing is a few legs up from Potter. At Chelsea, Potter was dismal. Id take Roy in a heart beat before Potter. Plus he is a sea weed.

Why some are saying Potter is a poor manager, I’m not sure? Things didn’t turn out great at Chelsea, but he wasn’t given time and Poch hasn’t exactly got off to a flying start either. I think we can all agree Chelsea is a poisoned chalice and any manager would struggle at that club. Me personally, I would say “ Potter” over Southgate all day long……

That’s ridiculous, whatever our circumstances, if we get there we’ve got to have a go at it, even if we fail miserably and get knocked out of the qualifiers by some Latvian team no-ones heard of. Some of us yearn for a bit of competitive European football at Selhurst.

Can not see how anyone wouldn’t know that is the truth of Palaces situation. If European competition was achieved the whole attitude toward squad size and quality would have to change. Not just because it could prove an embarrassing experience in that company if we didn’t, but more so because it’s very difficult to maintain a place in the Premier, and a run in Europe, even with an expanded squad. As we are it’s unthinkable.

Just my opinion, but I would be very surprised if Southgate even wanted to return to club management. In terms of the Palace job, he is based, happily, in Harrogate. I don't think he would move from there. Potter still lives in Hove. Geographically that's very doable. But there has to be a plan in place for Paddy otherwise why promote him ? Most managerial appointments carry an element of risk, but none much higher than giving the job to an untried and inexperienced candidate. Let's see...I'm focussing on worrying about this season !

Probably for the best in football, generally speaking. Ironically, this season is the least worried I’ve been about Palace for some time. I have huge trust in Roy, we look pretty solid now, have Olise to return and Franca to feature surely, defence and midfield look settled and we have two quality keepers. Granted squad pretty thin but the likes of relegation not even featuring in my thoughts so the only thing to concern myself with is seeing how well we can do and god willing a cup run. Happy days as far as I’m concerned. COYP
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

International breaks in the past have usually been a welcome respite from getting bashed in the Premier League.
