Any chance Wilf cancels contract by mutual consent and rejoins us before transfer window.

I would say he will be back in 2 years for a swan song and his testimony.

He'll never get a testimonial from Palace now, Wardy's been with us 13/14 seasons & even he hasn't had one, last player to get one was JS, if my memory serves me well.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Who remembers Jim Cannons testimonial in 82/3 it was an all black team v an all white team, can you imagine the uproar it would cause now.

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

Testimonials were right and fitting for retiring players when their best hope of making a living was investing in a pub. Now with an average salary of £3M+, I think they should be alright without one.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

Good, he’s made his bed and now he has to lie in it.

I’m sure he’s regretting it already. How long was his contract for Gala?

I can't understand the bitterness towards him...

Yes I went to the game, it was Vince Hilaire’s all black team, some great black players around at that time, Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham, Viv Anderson, Garth Crooks, Luther Blissett

Are testimonials still even a thing in the top divisions? Players earn so much money now, any gate receipts they might receive would be chicken feed to them

Donate to charity has been the recent trend but if Wardy’s not getting one they are probably over at Palace.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Wilf back. January transfer window maybe.

Testomonials used to be tax free income as money raised was regarded as a gift . Pretty good lump sum back in the day . Tax rules were changed though about 10 years ago with the vast increases in player wages which meant they were more or less a waste of time as an income top up .
Some players do still have them though in aid of charity's which are tax exempt

There does seem to be a degree of animosity or "bitterness" here. I suppose it is partly the fan mentality of loyalty beginning and ending with a players spell at a club.

I guess a lot of fans sensed, particularly in recent seasons, that his heart wasn't always in the club and that he would have jumped ship much sooner had he had the chance, and right offer had come along.

The other thing is that I don't think supporters necessarily warmed to him greatly as a personality. On the pitch he rarely smiled and, as we all know, was prone to a lot of moaning and gesticulating. Off pitch he always came across as being rather uncomfortable at being in front of a camera and tended to resort to cliches, leaving us not knowing quite what he is really like as person.

That is not how they work.

You think the player gets the money not at all the very little that is left after fees goes to charity.

That’s how it used to work, otherwise what’s the point?
