Are you suggesting that Hodgson with all his experience doesn't have 'world class knowledge'?

No-one (as far as I can tell) is suggesting that McCarthy is ready to take over now, but then he's not being asked to. He's being asked to continue his apprenticeship as Hodgson's assistant for at least the next season. Time will tell whether he develops sufficiently to be considered as our next manager.

As an aside, the order at Liverpool was Shankly, Paisley, Fagan and, if my memory serves me right a lot of football pundits were sceptical when Liverpool appointed Fagan but he proved them wrong.

Also Roy Evans came through their system, Ronnie Moran on a temporary basis and arguably Kenny Dalglish.

Roy Evans & Kenny Dalglish(although he was a player before)

Teddy Eagle has just beaten me to it

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

OMG, Are you seriously comparing the Liverpool boot room that had world class knowledge passed from Paisley to Shankly to Fagan etc to Paddy Macarthy managing our youth team?

It's all relative, he's working under Roy and Ray who have vast knowledge of the game.

Ted Buxton worked under Terry Venables for 30 years and was a damn good coach. Peter Taylor worked for over 20 years alongside Brian Clough and was very talented at spotting talent. Alex Fergusson had numerous No.2s over 30 odd years, not one of them became as good as he was. Only a couple even made it in management. I cant think of one thats still in work as a no.1.
There's nothing 'relative' about it. You're clutching at straws. If Macarthy makes it as a manager in the future I'll be genuinely happy for him. Right now there is zero evidence to back that up. Working a year as a no.2 will do little to change that.
Drawing comparisons with historical figures within the game is reaching at best.

All examples of no2's that step up and didn't work, paddy was his own no 1 at youth level and stepped in for us.
