Disagree in a big way 'Doombear', the Academy facilities are no doubt magnificent nowadays but it is not like we have only had an Academy for two years.
In the last 11 years Wan-Bissaka is the only homegrown player to have made the first team on a regular basis & then been sold on and not returned.
Parish is at the drop of a hat, quite happy to bang on about the Academy and South London, large catchment area, blah blah blah to the detriment of strengthening the first team, eg in January his ludicrous quote that this squad 'only needs a couple of loans'.
So, no the Academy coaches are not above criticism and how often do you watch highlights of other Premiership games where young players are introduced from the bench ? Often, but it doesn't happen with us because any that show promise are loaned out for a whole season and cannot return till that is up.
Further, if as seems likely, Roy stays another year, forget again about any involvement for young players.

I saw this in an article elsewhere and my first thought was 'people are gonna lose their s*** over Nathan Ferguson!'

My only assumption is we need backup and he covers the whole back line.

But to contradict that basis, I didn't expect Tomkins, Clyne & Ward to all get new deals. I assume it's the budget option. It's cheaper to re-sign them than buy fresh. Potentially all 4 are on lower wages too. If we're offering Zaha a pay rise, that money has to come from someone's pocket.

The step from youth team to senior football is so much bigger than people imagine. So many impressive juniors fall by the wayside because they cannot make that jump. One recent name that springs to mind is Reise Allesani. He was being watch by Man Utd I think at one point then could not make the step up required.

I've seen a few articles about 2017 England U17 squad lately, one of which was about the ex Man City keeper who is now a financial adviser. It's brutal how the paths of those players have varied.

We're all familiar with those 3 on the floor to the right.
Nya Kirby next to Guehi is quite poignant.

My understanding is that he started his career as a centre-half but was moved to right-back at WBA, in fact he has also played at left-back, however in the final analysis he has only featured in 22 games in 4 years, all but one in the Championship so at this juncture I really cannot adjudge him to be 'Versatile', able to play in different positions with aplomb.

I didn't say we had, had you read my post properly. I won't repeat myself -just go and re-read it or ignore as is your right.

Yes, I've seen other teams bring on youngsters as subs. Obviously, the big boys - Liverpool, Citeh, Chelsea etc. cornered the market in the better youngsters. Others, though, like Leeds, Southampton and even Everton seemed to bring on theirs out of desperation.

There's nothing wrong in sending out youngsters on loan. It helps them bridge the gap between the Academy and the PL. The big clubs have been doing it for years.

If Roy were to stay next season, I think he'll surprise you. I'm not saying he should stay BTW.

Our first team is pretty decent and will give most teams a good game as it stands, but it is a very small squad. I think last season we were quite lucky with injuries which was good as we had very little in reserve, especially pre-January. As it stands many in the retained list have not shown they are first-team ready:

Naouirou Ahamada - possible
Joachim Andersen
Jordan Ayew
Nathaniel Clyne
Cheick Doucouré

Malcolm Ebiowei - failed to make an impact at Hull
Odsonne Edouard
Ebere Eze
Vicente Guaita
Marc Guéhi
Will Hughes
Sam Johnstone
Jean-Philippe Mateta

Remi Matthews
Tyrick Mitchell
Michael Olise

Luke Plange - failed to make an impact on loan
Chris Richards
Jaïro Riedewald
Jeffrey Schlupp
James Tomkins
Joel Ward

Those in bold are the 16 outfield players (including Lerma) who have proven they can compete at PL level (17 if Wilf signs a new deal). Jairo has failed to convince and as it stands we have a cluster of young players who may or may not make it. Within the 16 Tomkins is unlikely to be able to manage a significant run of games based on his injury record and the same for Clyne. So far Richards has also been injury prone. Hodgson clearly doesn't rate Mateta and the jury is still out on Edouard.

If we sign no-one else I think we are going to need to be very lucky with injuries again. However, the fact Parish mentioned new players when talking about giving new deals to Ward, Clyne and Tomkins suggests we will be making more signings.

Sorry ive got to take issue with that statement, CR has ha 1(one) injury since he's been with us, a leg injury that lasted a total of 6 weeks. He has been available for selection ever since. So, no, he is NOT injury prone.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

The much-vaunted academy proving its value again, what is it ? 14 released and no obvious candidates to step up. J R-S apparently being loaned out for a full season to Ipswich.

In which case his ability will be tested and proven. Sink or swim for him now .

Textor has said that the shareholders should inject funds in proportion to their voting rights and it's therefore Parish that is holding up the investment as he can't afford his share

Textor hasn't got the money too put in his 40% either, if that is the case, he is similar to the Glaziers, borrows against his assets, rich on paper but not with liquid capital.
