At least with the delays in starting work on a new stand the current Main Stand will be around next year for us to celebrate its 100th birthday. And to think, it was only 40 years old when I first sat in it. Thanks for depressing me! It was only 36 years old when I first sat in it!!

I'm not sure what your point is. Are you agreeing that ALL ticket prices inevitably WILL go up when the extra seats become available - as the guy asserted? I don't think your pub analogy is quite the right one. If my pub took the piss in that way, I would go to another pub or get my alcohol elsewhere than a pub. That is how supply and demand works; as the price for goods and services goes up, the no of people prepared to pay that price diminishes. The pub then has to decide whether it can exist on fewer customers or whether it needs to review and reduce what it charges. If a football club drastically increases its prices, by the same logic demand will fall. I think all prices will go up (as everything does,) but that the new seats will cost even more as they will more than likely come with facilities - as opposed to the fairly dire fare we get now. The pub analogy was simply to illustrate that if a place gets a refurb someone else has to pay. As for going somewhere else locally most boozers ) as opposed say to your cafe bar,) round here have shut. Even Spoons has departed the town.

Well central Croydon is a complete dump at the moment, half the shops are still empty and the rest that are there aren't all that. Let's knock down the Whitgift centre and build it there.. Good transport links, local pubs and better than what's there at the moment!
The trouble with computers, of course, is that they're very sophisticated idiots |

It will be interesting to see how easily we fill our new capacity. In the'70s we could do 38k for big games and anything higher was rare.

While I agree with the above, I think there are two points here that it ignores: 1. The fact that Parish is the best chairman we've ever had says as much about the low quality of his predecessors as it does about him. That's not a direct criticism, but frankly, it hasn't taken a lot to exceed their level of performance. 2. More importantly, being the best doesn't absolve you from criticism. Pointing out someone's shortcomings/failures doesn't implicitly suggest you think they've achieved nothing. At least so far as I can see, the Old Stand rebuild has, thus far, cost a lot of money for no return. That may change if and when construction starts but for now, the jury is out. I agree with these comments its hard to see how the new stand will significantly increase revenue when ground capacity will increase by only circa 8000/per home game. This investment will require amortisation over many years to come and if that impacts on our team investment it could well end up being a red herring in the lower leagues!

Because, the new stand has more corporate and leisure facilities, one would imagine. It will also be more attractive to investors and perspective buyers.

It will be interesting to see how easily we fill our new capacity. Agree, this is really the million-dollar question. If we have state-of-the art corporate facilities in the new stand, I have no doubt those will be taken up but whether the size of our "standard" support can be increased is very much open to debate. In the'70s we could do 38k for big games and anything higher was rare. It's been a long time since those sort of numbers were seen and I wonder if cost doesn't have something to do with it. Back in those days, you didn't need to buy a ticket in advance; you could just rock up to the terraces and get in for, in relative terms, a pittance. The cost and procedures required to get a ticket to a game these days mitigates against anyone but the most committed supporter attending. That won't change when more seats are built. Football has made it difficult, rather than easy, for fans to attend games and I have to think that has impacted crowd numbers for the worse. Originally posted by Hrolf The Ganger
We do have this much mentioned huge catchment area, but will this materialize into large crowds, and if it does, will we need an even bigger stadium? People have been wheeling out the big catchment area trope for years now, but there's never really been any evidence that it translates into support. I think it's probably safe to say that around 30,000 is our natural level until there's any real evidence to the contrary.
