However, Mateta's hold up play and ball control were incredibly poor against UTD and I think we are much more likely to get punished for that by Newcastle. If Mateta does start, I hope he proves me wrong and shows the Mateta I think he can be.

He was awful against UTD, so was Edouard, i think he is a bit more physical, both are poor, i suspect PV may go with Ayew, solely to win the odd free kick, a sad situation, 30m spent on two CFs and 140k a week, not good value for money

All of Zaha, Olise and Ayew tend to try and do too much and not pass quickly enough. I wonder if any striker could do well under those circumstances. I think we need to be quicker and not try to walk it in as often

This is exactly the sort of thing I mean. I like the way we play now but sometimes I miss the counter attacking. It's frustrating watching us give the opposition time to reset. similarly, if Olise and Zaha could put crosses in earlier with defenders still running back towards goal, it would give our attackers more of a chance and make the defenders more uncomfortable

A really tough fixture - I feel Newcastle are one of the best all round teams in the league. They have money, spent well and Howe has done an amazing job getting them to play his style of football. As others have said, we need to play quick, attacking football. The early goal would really lift the crowd - and with a bit of luck, you never know…. Head says: 0-2 Newcastle

I think they win. I don't think we are good enough to put in back to back performances and Newcastle is a bit of a bogey club. I hope I am wrong 0-3

Strikers need to be given a run of starts and that basically hasn't happened this season for either Edouard and particularly Mateta. Mateta has had just FOUR starts this season - early on scoring his solitary goal against Villa. Two of those starts were in the League Cup Edouard has had 11 starts with 2 of those in the cup games. He has scored 5 goals and has 2 assists. Edouard did reasonably well in his run before the world cup scoring 3 in 6 league starts. Both were carrying injuries and/or were sick post World cup with Ayew playing instead. Neither Edouard nor Mateta are impact subs and their sub appearances have been more about fresh legs than anything else. I'd just like to see PV give one of them a proper run in the side between now and the end of the season before we dismiss them as useless.

I think that both need an opportunity in the first team for an extended period of time. However, I also think we need to get the ball into them quicker and earlier than we do both through the middle and from out wide. I'm not sure we'll have a 'decent' striker until we start giving them opportunities to score where they aren't surrounded by 4/5 defenders given time to prepare
