The current owners/ management do not seem very interested in
the players who played for the club before 1990. Parish perhaps
"recognizes" Mark Bright but appears possibly disinterested in
anybody who played for the club before then. John Jackson
apparently gets a mention on the Orient site but nothing from
Palace. The death of Terry Long ignored. The Johnny Byrne
lounge apparently becomes a broom cupboard.

To be fair to Parish, he may be too young to have seen Jacko play. But, it does beg the question as to whether Palace need to appoint a club historian, if they don’t already have one.

The Rev Nigel Sands used to perform this role very well. The club’s web site obitis a bit like warm to say the least.

It has to be remembered that Palace’s crowds in the old First Division after the club’s first promotion in 1969 were significantly higher in those days than they are now. London derbies regularly attracted 40k plus attendances when most of the ground was standing only. When we won promotion from the old Div 2 in 1969 over 37k were in attendance to see us beat Fulham 3-2 (having been 2-0 down at h/t), while in 1979 ‘the team of the 80s’ attracted in excess of 49k to the final game of the season against Burnley.

So, while the TV coverage may be much greater these days, a lot more of us actually saw Jacko’s heroics in the flesh. And, in my mind he will always be a Palace hero.

Great keeper. Really sad. I recall regularly arguing he was better than Bonetti with Chelsea supporting friends.
Just kept catching the ball. Little or no punching. Martyn the only previous keeper to get near him.
Must be worth a clap at next game.

I was right behind the goal when Swindles headed in, and Jacko had a massive smile on his face as he picked the ball out of the net, not saying he let it in, but i think he could have reached a bit more, i like to think so, i have watched it a few times on youtube, we had to win, then beat Burnley three days later to go up as champions above the seaweed, lovely memory's, RIP Jacko

The Rev Nigel Sands deserves a place in the clubs history books ( or at least mentioned on dispatches) he was the "go to" point of contact for all things Palace for many years -

A bit like Hy Money was for the photos -

I had the good fortune to meet him when I was younger and then again a number of years ago at a reunion for players of his era.
He was such a nice man and for Palace, a great servant and goalkeeper.
Hounded out by Malcolm Allison from memory - he didn't want to leave because he loved Palace.
A great shame and sad news.
