I think maybe we should avoid comparing Willo to Stuart Hall! True, I remember him summing up a bottom of the table clash by saying it was about as 'bottom' as you could get, he finished with 'I've got nappy rash'. Willo would never refer to nappy rash or bottoms.

It always feels like a betrayal when someone who seems so nice turns out to be a monster. Harris and Saville seemed like suspect cnuts, but some like Hall were more shocking, to me anyway.

Olise did what Erling Braut Haaland is doing - talk with hsi boots! Erling once said: My granduncle (a norwegian farmer) has told me to talk with my boots

Took my younger son to the Leeds game a couple of weeks ago for his 10th birthday. Got to the ground early as he was desperate to get his top autographed by as many Palace players as possible. Some of the players were naturally relaxed, chatted to my son, signed his top, took a selfie with him etc. on this point…Joel Ward is one of the most genuine, nicest players I have ever met. Once my son told him it was his birthday, he reached into his sports bag and gave him one of his training tops! Unbelievable. However, I want to focus on this thread…so when he asked Olise for his autograph, the guy never looked at my son, or smiled and seemed to be out of his comfort zone. Without doubt, he is a shy person. I guess the point is sometimes you forget how young these players really are, and don’t know how to cope with the fans/media attention they receive. His interview on Sunday was just an honest set of answers by a player who clearly has not been ‘coached’ in how to answer media questions.

Comes across as a bit aloof, however, this is often just a shield/defence mechanism. In a changing room you have different characters - some need a bollocking, some need an arm around them - Olise is clearly the latter. I think PV is managing him well

Anyone ever thought the interviewer was just trying to keep it as simple as possible for a lad that may be shy and handling other issues? Yeah - those questions are asked and players waffle out sound bites, but that's media training taking over. My thoughts - next time send Olise out with a pal and share the interview, we've seen many a time a player add some banter/encouragement or work on answers - the club can't set him up to fail like that again.

He failed?? Olise is a valuable member of our football team. Why all this crap about teaching him to perform in front of reporters, he's a footballer and thus does his (brilliant) talk on the pitch.

Whilst Michael is so young & clearly yet to feel at ease in front of a camera perhaps on those occasions where he is being requested to fulfil the media role it would be better to send him out with someone (like with the captain of the day) who can act as a kind of buffer to help him relax -

Absolutely agree. I completely reject any notion that footballers should have some sort of 'media training' alongside their role which should only be considered in the instance they are likely to get themselves/the club in trouble for whatever reason. Yes they have a duty to conduct themselves properly given their exposure to the public however the requirement for them to 'entertain' us should be limited to the football pitch. A lot of these young players, Olise included, are very young too. If Sky et al don't think they interview well then... don't interview them!!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I don't see that he needs any media training, if you watch the full interview. Certainly better than I would have done at his age.
