This is spot on , I’m not slaying the season , if someone had offered me 11th 19 points going into this ridiculous World Cup I would have beaten there hand off , however you are completely right , nothing has been convincing and every game we have won could quite easily have gone the other way , I kept saying to my mates and it still stands, I don’t know whether we are a good side playing quite average and still grinding out results like top teams do? Or whether we are not very good and just beating teams now and again around us. This break could be in our favour, and a few signings in January are massive including midfielder left/right back ,.
If not we are just going to do what we are doing and plod on around the mid table , lose a few games and look over our shoulders then win a few and get excited about top half until we lose again,
It’s frustrating but as I said I would have taken this all day long , I just feel like we are ready to kick on but then not .. if you know what I mean

The common denominator is that virtually every club in the middle or tail end of the league has improved their squad since last season whereas we've weakened ours...and it was paper-thin to begin with. Look-at our wins this season and tell me which you describe as convincing.

“This is a crisis, a large crisis.... in fact if you have a moment, it’s a 12 storey crisis, magnificent entrance hall, carpeting throughout, 24 hour portage , and an enormous sign on the roof saying “This , is a large crisis” - Edmund Blackadder

top six??

In your dreams.Yesterday's performance was pathetic, weak and woeful against a team ,despite some modest improvement and luck, are probably nailed on certainties for the drop.

We should have done much better.Simple.

We could well be a top six side next season but not in this league.

One minute world beaters the next relegation fodder.

How true has this turned out to be!

There really isn't a lot between the teams outside the top 8, but we look well off the top 6 and top 10 will be tough with the size and quality of our squad. Hopefully McArthur can get fit during the break and maybe we can add one or two quality additions in January. Watching McGinn today I was thinking that's the kind of little pr!ck we need in midfield. Someone who will do anything for the win however ugly it might be. We also need another left back to challenge and support Mitchell.

The key thing is I think we have to be patient with both Vieira and the players. We have not been consistent but hardly any team has been this season. Also with so few players going to the WC we may have an advantage as the players can rest, PV and has team can analyse the season so far and work on weaknesses and we'll have time to work out transfers.

Top 6 ?? lol, on what planet ??
Not while we have a chairman who prefers to bathe in the publicity of the approval to extend the main stand or the televising of the academy.
The team is standing still at best in terms of integrating new players, only Doucoure and then no-one on last season's team when he was unavailable.
We have, as a previous poster commented, been fortunate in a number of games where it could have easily gone the other way, the current lack of quality in the Premiership is also helping.
Any side outside of Arsenal, Moan City, Newcastle, Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool and Moan Utd could conceivably be caught in a relegation scrap in the second half of the season.
The above average spending in summer 2021 was clearly forced on the club given all those players out of contract and the need to reduce the average age.
We still have players like Ward, Luka, Ayew, Riedewald, Macarthur, Fergusson and a goalkeeper contracted now to almost 37 on the books who either need to be upgraded or jettisoned to free up funds.
Tellingly, PV's post match interview yesterday was one of the first where he really started to appear frustrated at the shortcomings of the personnel available.
January is important given the disappointing summer window.

Parish does seem to be hoping our academy can raise us to the next level, we can’t compete with the big boys on transfers , but players like guehi and Gallagher could have been home grown in the past, along with others I’m sure, Chelsea poached the best talents from us in the past and made it a sideline business to give their already massive war chests a boost, that’s the future hopefully rather than some oil rich states that try to cover up their misgivings by buying into our sports

Something that's puzzled me about this thread is why, having watched West Ham's woeful underperformance against us, anyone would want us to finish in a European competition place.

So what should our aspirations be? Surely European qualification or winning a cup. Otherwise what’s the point?

Does there have to be a point?

Winning a cup would be good, after all the Zenith Data Systems one was a long while ago, but for me, that would be the icing on the cake of following Palace.

Is it so wrong to enjoy football match by match, for it's own sake - hard I know when we play like we sometimes do, but that's counterbalanced by those amazing games when we go (usually) 'oop north' and come home rejoicing with 3 points in the bag that no-one expected, having played them off the park.

It's enough for me.....
