Nah. You're not. Grossly overrated in my opinion. Like Mozart, they wrote pop for their time. Catchy tunes. It made them money. I admire them for their writing (Lennon, McCartney) and Harrison could play the guitar well, but as a band, pretty 'meh'. "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah". Inspiring lyrics... The reason I re-started this thread was because I'd just finished reading a book about the story of Abbey Road studios It's fascinating and includes the following quote from EMI recording engineer Norman Smith: 'I was setting up the microphone when I first saw the lyrics on the music stand, "She Loves You, yeah, yeah, yeah, She Loves You, yeah, yeah, yeah, She Loves You, yeah, yeah, yeah, Yeah!" I thought, Oh My God, what a lyric! This is going to be one I do not like. But when they started to sing it - bang, wow, terrific, I was up at the mixer jogging around.' It was written mostly in a Manchester hotel room after a concert and recorded on 1st July 1963. It remains the band's best selling single in the UK and the top-selling single of the 1960s here by any artist. Guess they must have got something right.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Norman Smith, of course, also had some chart success in the early 70s as Hurricane Smith, most notably with 'Don't let it die', which was probably the first green/ecologically conscious song ever to hit the charts. Adopted by the WWF, to whom royalties are still paid.

Off top of head "Big Yellow Taxi" Yeah, yeah. I should have said 'one of the first...'. I realised almost immediately after posting.
