How to handle things properly, courtesy of Rugby League: "The game's English governing body, the RFL, said "due respect will be paid to Her Majesty before all fixtures" with a period of silence being observed at matches, the national anthem being played where possible and black armbands being worn by players and officials. "This has been a difficult decision - we have taken into account the desire expressed by players and clubs at community level to come together to share their grief, and to celebrate the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," the RFL said in a statement."

Postponement. What an utterly ridiculous gesture. If the Queen stood for anything, it was the "life must go on" ethos. She herself showed us perhaps more than anyone that it could go on even at the worst of times, without sacrificing dignity, reflection, and respect. The postponement of games this weekend is nothing more than yet another sickening example of people's modern-day desire to bathe in the spotlight of a major event; to somehow make ourselves central to a narrative which is entirely unrelated to what we are doing. By postponing football a statement is being made about football, not about the death of the Queen. The club's social media announcements yesterday, a minute's silence at games and black armbands were both appropriate and sufficient displays of mourning instead of which we now have a completely unnecessary and self-indulgent hi-jacking by football of the nation's grief. Mourning the loss of the Queen is in no way enhanced by the postponement of football matches. In fact, the very opposite is true. This weekend's games afforded a now wasted chance for communities to come together and collectively and publicly show their respect. Pathetic. One again the game of football makes me utterly sick. Well reasoned Syd. I totally agree. Yet again our sports regulators have got it all wrong. Who are these people?

I have posted earlier on my opinion about games this weekend, but just to add my final thoughts on this thread -( at the risk of stating the obvious) One decision to play games this weekend obviously wouldn't need to be the same decision (to play / postpone) any games scheduled to be played on the day / time of the state funeral - The entire Nation could effectively close for that period of maybe 4 / 5 hours whilst everyone watches at home / lines the streets, pays their respects in any way they see appropriate.

What has happened to this once great nation. Now our solution to any hardship seems to be stay home. At this rate with the World Cup coming up and no doubt many more strikes to come this winter which will cancel games (like Brighton) I can see them cancelling the season this winter. I think the PL and League felt they were in a damned if you do damned if you don't situation, and plumped for what they felt was the safest option, believing they'd come in for less flack if they called off the weekend's fixtures than if they had been allowed to go ahead. To put this into an historical context, the Football League fixtures all went ahead on the Saturday following the death of the previous monarch, King George VI, and that in an age when there was, one assumes , a greater deference to the monarchy.

What a great advert for our Queen and country to have shown the world where our prem matches are shown with the British public taking a minutes silence, the national anthem being played and black armbands being worn. Ludicrous decision to cancel all football. Personally I would have liked to of been at our match discussing with those around me the events of the week. Can go to the pub, restaurant, theatre, cinema and so on but can’t go to football - ludicrous

What may have influenced this is the f***wits amongst football fans have regularly and repeatedly demonstrated their in ability to respect a minutes silence at matches, hence authorities have resorted to a minutes applause (which although inappropriate in such circumstances, is less so than the alternative of showing no respect).

The RFL, the Rugby Union (a sport far closer to the Royal family than football), a cricket test match (another sport far closer to the Royal family than football), even horse racing with the St Leger tomorrow (the closest sport to the Royal family of all) are all going ahead this weekend, as are many other sports. This is simply another case of the utterly feeble football authorities misjudging the moment and trying to draw attention to themselves. The people who "run" our game are f***ing cretins; they can't get VAR right; they can't get mourning right; they can't get the "fit and proper persons" test right; they're not fit for purpose. The grey men in suits who "lead" the game ought to be removed en masse. They're a bunch of corrupt, money-grubbing incompetents.

The FA, otherwise known as the sweet FA. The cricket's going well after an emotional singing of the national anthem from the crowd.
