Like Nat Lofthouse, who got his second goal for Bolton in the 1958 Cup Final against Manchester United in exactly that way. It can be viewed on Google and to a modern observer looks utterly shocking, but obviously was within the laws. In fact, opposition players were allowed to barge the goalie whenever he had the ball in his hands, thus putting him under serious pressure when he was trying to kick out. Are those things still within the laws?

No they are not. Simple.

Also Andy Gray for Everton in the FA Cup final against Watford (1984?). His winning goal was a thundercrack on their keeper. Should never have stood.

Yep, think that has been well documented WE.

I suspect Andersen was doing nothing out of the ordinary by giving Nunez a tough time and using a bit of physicality and that Nunez's first attempts of sticking his head in Andersen's face was the initial reaction which provoked Andersen to (rightly) remonstrate somewhat and shove Nunez's outstretched arm which in turn led to 'the' headbutt.

Again, as has been mentioned by many, I am sure this has not gone unnoted by many a PL defender as an expose of Nunez's fragility and inability to handle a bit of 'rough-housing' and his 'red card' mishandling of the situation.

There was also quite a nasty foul on Andersen in the first half. JA did nothing more than a good PL defender does. Wait until Nunez comes up against Leeds!

Dixie Dean(Everton?) scored 60/62 goals in one season many, many, moons ago. Most of those were when he shoulder barged the 'keeper into the net.

A poster earlier in the thread said that all the 'argy-bargy' that goes on in the penalty box, can't be policed by the ref, yes it can, it just needs a brave ref to give a pen(both ends) & for other refs to follow suit & it will soon stop. Bit like refs now allowing the game to flow a lot more & the likes of JA not getting his squillions of free-kicks per game.

The challenge that resulted in Bert Trautman breaking his neck, comes to mind ( I have on,y seen it on film)

My take was an elbow prior to the cross that came in to their eventual goalscorer. It wasn't clear from highlights, but Nunez seemed to throw his elbow into JA's chest to steal a march on him, but it was moot as the cross was nowhere near them. Andersen reacted understandably, but unprofessionally and the rest is history.

You are wrong, he did “rub” his head into Andersen’s face at 1min 10. Also watch the tackle at 26 seconds. Absolutely schooled by JA, a masterclass

IMO It's views like this that keep us in the dark ages. Nutting someone is never an in-house problem. It is assault and should be treated as such or will never be eradicated.

Agree completely. A bit of handbags should absolutely be self regulated within the game but assault is assault. If you get away with headbutting someone in a live football match with not prospect of being properly punished then where will it end? By the idiot that thinks its wrong to compare it to a nightclub scenario's reckoning, a player could end up with a fractured skull and never play again but the culprit just gets a red card and a 3 match ban?
Do me a favour!

Giggsy didn't head butt his missus either. Merely a head clash.

I find it weird the negative attention Andersen has received to be honest, it's almost like no one has ever watched a PL centre-back before. Had Nunez not reacted as he did many neutrals would probably even have had Andersen as a MOTM contender. Had Andersen been a Liverpool defender pundits would have been wetting their knickers at how easily he contained the striker and celebrated the sh!thousery.

Personally, I think Liverpool and its fans are desperately trying to excuse the fact their "star" signing lost it with the slightest of provocation. The only reason to involve the police is to report that Liverpool have been robbed of £85m.

In all fairness to Liverpool the team, Milner and Klopp were taking none of Nunez's sh1t at the time and clearly saw he deserved red. That would not have been the same with plenty of clubs. One can only imagine the grace with which Fergie, or today Tuchel or Conte would have taken it.
I gained a lot of respect for Milner, who I've always thought has a decent enough attitude anyway (even when constantly getting skinned by Wilf).

I agree; also surely VAR is there to look at potential penalty incidents. So it needs brave VAR officials too. Or rather it needs VAR officials to actually do their job.

If that head butt had occured in the local night club or pub, there would have been all sorts of reaction along the lines of the culprit being arrested and charged etc etc,why is it then acceptable to deal with this offence by internal discipline when it is clearly an offence that should be dealt with by the police, what kind of example does it give to population if there is one rule for footballers and everyone else is treated differently,it is about time this was dealt with by criminal prosecution route!!
