I haven't got the time to look it up now, but I'm pretty sure that Premier League clubs have to have academies and that one of the reasons Brentford ditched theirs in favour of an informal u21/reserve team is that they were outside of the Premier League at the time, and so not caught by the rules. Usually, when something is grandfathered in there's a time limit before compliance is required so I wonder if they'll be able to continue without an academy on a permanent basis.

I am certainly NOT a reader of the 'Guardian' but I discovered the following link : There we go then, that would appear to confirm it: if we want to copy the academy-less model pioneered by Brentford, we will need to get relegated first, then never come back up. Small prices to pay, I'm sure....

An interesting side note to underline the point. Two top hospitality seats at Anfield tonight will cost you £3,750-odd. That's the same amount of revenue you'd raise from 1,000 normal seats at £37.50 each. Edited by sydtheeagle (15 Aug 2022 10.00am)

The U18s and now under 21s bring so much to the club I wouldn't want to be without them. I follow them assiduously, they play quality opposition and I can imagine preferring them to the seniors!

Well, what Brentford definitely have not done is haemorrhage money in the transfer market with zero return. For example : Yohan Cabaye £10m - Left on a free. These incredible losses are simply unsustainable for a club of our size. Hmm yes....but then how much each year did we get for staying in the premier league becuase we had these players?

We took 4 points off Man City last season, for example, but even the greatest Palace optimist in the history of Palace optimists would struggle to argue that we've got it right whereas City have got it wrong.
