I haven't got the time to look it up now, but I'm pretty sure that Premier League clubs have to have academies and that one of the reasons Brentford ditched theirs in favour of an informal u21/reserve team is that they were outside of the Premier League at the time, and so not caught by the rules.

Usually, when something is grandfathered in there's a time limit before compliance is required so I wonder if they'll be able to continue without an academy on a permanent basis.

There we go then, that would appear to confirm it: if we want to copy the academy-less model pioneered by Brentford, we will need to get relegated first, then never come back up.

Small prices to pay, I'm sure....

An interesting side note to underline the point. Two top hospitality seats at Anfield tonight will cost you £3,750-odd. That's the same amount of revenue you'd raise from 1,000 normal seats at £37.50 each.

The U18s and now under 21s bring so much to the club I wouldn't want to be without them.

I follow them assiduously, they play quality opposition and I can imagine preferring them to the seniors!

Well, what Brentford definitely have not done is haemorrhage money in the transfer market with zero return.

For example : Yohan Cabaye £10m - Left on a free.
: Connor Wickham £9m - Left on a free.
: Andros Townsend £13m - Left on a free.
: Christian Benteke £27m - Left on a free (ish)
: Patrick van Aanholt £13m - Left on a free.
: Mamadou Sakho £26m - Left on a free.
: Cheikhou Kouyate £10 - Left on a free.

These incredible losses are simply unsustainable for a club of our size.

Hmm yes....but then how much each year did we get for staying in the premier league becuase we had these players?

those players weren't born with selling on in mind - we got value out of Kouyate, Cabaye, PVA and Andros - Ben and Sakho was not such good value, but it's more the wages where the lack of sustainability is - and remember our sell-ons ... Bolasie, AWB?

When you say "did we get"...the vast majority of whatever "we" get is paid out to the players.

Who’s right Brentford or us?
If the aim is/was to stay in the PL and earn the revenue that comes from it, then our initial policy of signing seasoned pros for that purpose has thus far worked.
That was obviously the first step, Parish is on record saying that the academy is the next step alongside improving the stadium.

Lol, but not necessarily true in a one-off match. We took 4 points off Man City last season, for example, but even the greatest Palace optimist in the history of Palace optimists would struggle to argue that we've got it right whereas City have got it wrong.
