Perhaps due to the position of the flag, placing the ball as far as away from it as possible gives the kicker more room to execute the corner kick. There have been comments made by some players that taking corners these days is fraught with problems as you have to cope with restricted room, support staff and photographers and the main issue of 2 different surfaces- grass on the pitch and astro-turf around the pitch perimeters. All of which make corner taking more of an issue these days.

One positive is it's great when you beat a team who have been time wasting all game. especially if you were losing for most of it. Not much of a consolation I confess

The verbals have been there since time began, of course, and given that the line-o stands so close, why don't they enforce the one rule that they are responsible for, is the question.

The Community Shield game lasted 102 minutes and the average match time on the opening day of the EFL season was 105 mins 33 seconds. Naturally, lots of venom being discharged mainly from losers in this new rule era. The big question is - will it encourage or discourage time wasting?
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Perhaps the next developed skill will be - ways to waste time whilst keeping the ball in play without getting booked for time wasting. Originally posted by Palace Old Geezer

I can see it playing havoc with the traditional train timings where the rail companies anticipate that certain trains will be mainly focussed on getting people home from the game / visiting supporters out of the area.

Hopefully midweek games will go back to a more traditional 7.30 pm kick off (instead of 8pm) in the knowledge that the game will go on longer than it previously used to - thinking of families trying to get kids home after the game on a school night.

"Subbing" was recently discussed in another thread. In theory, a substitution will not eat up any playing time because additional time is supposed to be added on by the referee but, as mentioned in that thread, they nevertheless can disrupt the flow of the game. Your suggestion about the final phase is interesting, but surely you must see that coaches would simply tell their players to start limping at the appropriate time! Jorden Ayew is forever limping

All sounds very noble, and on a level playing field it would be. As it is it’s fifteen more minutes for the team with 5 £60 mill substitutes to get a result in most match’s. Ironically the substitutions tend to wast the most time any way.

I know one thing they could do to discourage time wasting, if a player goes down injured, obviously if it’s clearly not serious, let the physio on and then carry on. They do it in Rugby, they just play on around the physio and stricken player. I’m sure those rolling round like they’d been shot would soon jump up if they weren’t the centre of attention anymore and they’d soon learn it’s a waste of time feigning injury anyway Edited by monkey (08 Aug 2023 11.31am)
