Stats suggest the reality: whereby he used to be a mainstay in the midfield, for the last two seasons he has appeared 18 and 21 times in the league respectively, in addition to which he hasn't scored either in each of those seasons. To imagine the he is an essential part of the midfield these days is deluded thinking; he is in the twilight of his PL career and this season will probably be his last at this level.

McArthur is a big talker on the pitch and leads by example as well. Until his injury last season he was one of our best players. Since then he's struggled to get a run of games. I definitely think a new deal was the right move even ignoring sentimental reasons as he exemplifies what a footballer should be and that is important in an increasingly youthful squad, a bit like Noble was in the last few seasons at Spam. We would not have lost the first goal on Friday if he was playing. He would have had players actually in positions that made sense and would have got a grip of that midfield. Sorely missed while he is injured.
