Kind of chicken and egg. no? Boris can get things done as he has a massive majority fed by Brexit fatigue. She could get nothing done as she inherited a hung parliament and a divided country. Very different apples. Not really. Boris did the right thing kicking the Remain Tory MPs out of the party after they lied to the electorate that was his moment of real courage since then he has backed down and fudged like May. Mrs May tried to keep the party and country together and satisfied no one with her fudges. Edited by Badger11 (06 Jun 2022 5.27pm)

He would have weighed the personal risk to him against the long established principle of not proceeding without a mandate. Thus, after he unseated her, he held out till the general election when he knew he had the numbers. For that alone I respect her; but have little positive thought for him. You may admire the realpolitik of what he did. I do not. I only respect realpolitik in terms of its effectiveness and reality. I don't value May's political opinions but she was less of a liar than Johnson.

The only question the Conservative MPs should be asking themselves is, is the average Tory voter more willing to vote Tory with BJ or someone else, its clear cut.

Also, somewhat rich given the Brexit campaign, but we will leave that to the extremely long thread on that well trod issue.

The starting gun has been fired, the damage is done, bungle will probably limp on, a wounded animal, and with the looming economic crisis , he probably should be at the helm of sinking ship brittania! Even if a decent CONservative took over, they would hardly deserve the challange , let alone an opposition government, let him limp on, the public boo at every opportunity, the party split, let him own the brexit fiasco, hungry people won"t be laughing at his peppa, peppa pig act, the winter will see people freeze to death, let him take the flak!

So 148 against that's much more than was anticipated, I thought it would struggle to get past 100. The 211 for will include MPs on the Johnson 'payroll'. And these are his tory colleagues not voters floating or otherwise. What do the public think? The C4 polling 'expert' said that the word associated with Johnson by their interviewing was 'liar' and that 97% of them just did not believe him.

I assume Wisbech that you want Jeremy Hunt to stand because he is even more useless that Teresa May! Neither Mrs May nor Jeremy Hunt are useless. Both are principled politicians who put country before either personal ambition or party. Which is quite unlike Johnson and the ragtag bunch of opportunists who try to defend him. Johnson is an embarrassment, both here in the UK and especially abroad. I want the country to be led by someone with integrity who demonstrates an unswerving commitment to uphold the law. Never forget, Johnson was over-ruled by the Supreme Court even before he won in 2019. No-one currently in government could do that. They are all tainted and some will need to be sent to the back benches. Someone like Hunt, who was sacked by Johnson, has to be the prime candidate. I was tipping him months ago, well before "Partygate" surfaced.

That was much closer than I thought it would be by this evening. It's weird how just a few hours can change how you think things will pan out and then are proved utterly wrong. If somebody had told me that result at 10.00am this morning, I would have believed it more than possible but come 8.00pm, I would have been saying less than 70.

I take great heart from the way the Brexiteers here are responding to the prospect of a Tory Party led by Hunt. Things are looking better.

Edited by Badger11 (06 Jun 2022 5.27pm) Of the many stupid things he has done, this was probably the most stupid. Those MPs were acting in the way MPs are supposed to act. They were using their judgement to decide what was in the country's best interest, risking their political future in the process. In short, they were behaving with the integrity so bereft of Johnson. It was then that his total lack of decency and fitness for office was laid bare. Instead of trying to find ways to heal divisions, he widened them and laid down the path that led to today.
