As for our back up for Andersen and Guehi, we don't yet know what will happen with Kouyate but he is a CB cover option if he stays. Also, I can see Ward being asked to focus more on the CB cover role, especially if Clyne stays and makes the RB position his own. As for Ferguson - who knows?!! Finally, it will be interesting to see if Jake O'Brien gets a decent run out in pre-season, with a view to being CB cover or whether he'll get another loan out. The young Irish lad had a good spell at Swindon. Tarkowski would be a starter at both Everton and Newcastle, thus will be one last pay day for him so my money would be on Newcastle.

The young Irish lad had a good spell at Swindon. This is all very much a moot point as I don't think we'd be in for him and it was only ever really my opinion on who I'd go for from relegated teams. However, Everton have Keane, Mina, Holgate, Godfrey and Branthwaite. Newcastle are being heavily linked with the likes of Botman & Ake etc. as well as having Burns, Schaar, Clark, Fernandez, Lascelles already at the club. Many of these won't be there come the start of the season, but it's still more competition than what we have. I think if anything, we are more likely to see CB cover come from something like Colwill on loan but I was merely saying that I could see him on a free being a good fit/option for us. Solid experienced player offering genuine competition on a free and him joining an established, progressive club with a realistic chance of challenging for a starting spot.

I'd also hope that any player would have the mentality that they have the ability to displace the current players at the club, rather than have a guarantee they would start. I think we offer the least competition for regular playing time for a club in that 8th-17th area of the league, with only Anderson & Guehi as first choice and then an ageing and injury prone Tomkins as back up. I'm not suggesting the club are in for him, however, I think both the player and club could do a lot worse and it would make sense to bring in a player of his experience and ability on a free for a couple of years whilst we focus on the more immediate requirements of the squad. He's not a free though, just because no transfer fee is required. He will get a massive signing on fee and then over £100k a week for maybe the next 4 seasons. When Defoe moved to Bournemouth a few years back on a free he received a £4m signing on fee. A good player but not one for us - too old, expensive and CB is a position we need further depth but not a new starter.

I've always thought if Zaha goes, Cornet wouldn't be a bad replacement.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Click-bait sites seem increasingly certain that Tarkowski is Everton bound. Our retention of Tomkins suggests we aren't or weren't interested in the Burnley CB.
