There was, in the Eighties, quite a lot of 2nd homes getting burned down in Wales, hence the joke doing the rounds at the time.

"Come home to a real fire...buy a holiday home in Wales"

That joke was made by 'Not The Nine O'Clock News'. It was a parody of a TV advert of the time by British Coal. Yes, as recently as the late 70s/early 80s, coal was still being advertised on the telly!

And herein lies just one of the problems. How do you define 'local' ? There must be some definition used by Local Authorities/Governments.
And if you have enough money and desire, you can always get past the rules.

I am not aware of the detail of how it works in Guernsey, but believe the homes that are in each category were determined a long time ago. It's neither geographical or size. Only people born in Guernsey can buy closed market homes there.

The little knowledge I have is because the ex-husband of my sister married his second wife, who was Guernsey born. They were both working for a stock-broker in the City and decamped to Guernsey where they bought a mansion in the closed market, overlooking the sea, and he set up as a broker there managing the funds of the rich and famous, "offshore". Footballers we all know and love are among his clients. To say he has done well, would be an understatement!

I guess this is what is being reversed by work from home, but second homes are not adding anything much. Tourism, of course, is likely the mmain business of a lot of these areas. It's stupid to hassle the tourists and make them go somewhere else. I had a friend who was a staunch Cornish nationalist. He spoke Cornish, he was in the Royal Engineers, he had no problem saying what he thought of second homes.
Last time I was in Cornwall was maybe 40 years ago. My Grandad blew up the caravan by cooking a Fray Bentos pie unopened in the microwave. We were in St Ives.

I've probably mentioned this on another thread of which the topic I forget, but I was working in a well known Manhattan bar & It wasn't unusual as the bar was Irish owned & operated for customers to twist themselves into a knot & deny any English roots.
Italian, Irish, Spanish German, French, Dutch, Scottish, Welsh you name it but anything but being Anglo/English American
On one occasion I had one dropkick describe himself to the Barman as being 'Cornish American'

On a lighter note. Could this not be a perfect business opportunity for someone? Planning permission aside.
Build a state of the art restroom with obviously toilets as well as a sauna, jacuzzi, showers etc.

I think, and it is only my opinion. That Cornwall has exploited itself as a holiday destination for many years. Todays situation has been brewing away, unchallenged, for decades.

Wales was slightly different, that towns are areas, that although beautiful and scenic in their own right, also had working communities. Not just places like Newport and Port Talbot , but also large swathes of agriculture and rural infrastructure.

And you can blames the Welshies for selling at high prices to people after a second home, but a lot of the local industries need protection, which is why the Welsh Government feels it had to step in. House prices were becoming unaffordable for Welsh workers, who if i'm brutally honest, can be poorly paid when compared to London, and other English cities.

Wales is seeking to conserve it's rural heritage and dissuade holiday home use, whereas St Ive's is torn as it relies heavily on tourism for income to the area.

Just my random thoughts. Happy to hear others

There is a logical flaw here. Second homes is not tourism. Wales has both and benefits considerably from tourism. Perhaps it has fewer of the dis benefits as it isn’t as concentrated and has a longer season.

Second homes in wales will pay triple council tax from next year. Tourist cottages pay no council tax at all.

I agree that empty second homes is morally unjustified in areas where affordable housing is very hard to find.

Perhaps comparison with Wales was quite unfair. Their are loads of routes into and out of Wales, for a start. Cornwall has three main roads, all linking with the M5. During the summer the queues of caravans on single-lane carriageways used to start on the A30, soon after it switched to the A303 near Stonehenge.
Cornwall has smaller traditional industries that have successfully morphed to accommodate visitors. Fishing, pottery/crafts, tin mine visits, aside from the usual 5hltty Cornish fudge/icecream/cream teas and plastic pirate 5hlte..
A victim of its success, you could argue. Market forces and Capitalism shown at their best. But with most things, there is a saturation point.
Cornwall is slightly unique geographically, in as much as it is a cul-de-sac.
I was born in Cornwall (can i get a discount on a house for being local ?). Been back twice since (1990's), and it was heaving with tourists. By then, they Had the Eden Project and the Tate and most pubs seemed to have pirate and smuggler themes.

I have no idea what the longer term solution would be. charging for toilets is akin to pl55ing in the wind. Years, or decades, of swerving the inevitable has led to the current situation. It needs firm local Authority stewarding to strike the right balance, but they'll be scared of losing businesses and revenue.

Since the Cornish consider themselves so separate isn't it racism objecting to "outsiders" buying property whatever they do with it?

Talking of Cornwall, you may have seen the story about a 150 yr old pub, The Star, in the Cornish village of Vogue. It's being asked to avoid using the name Vogue by the magazine of the same name. Bloomin' bonkers.

Here's the BBC's take on it.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

The cynic in me,..or perhaps realist, would say the pub was in need of publicity and they knew someone in the press to get it sorted.

So they are effectively the most racist area in Europe, actively alienating anyone who wasn’t born there. Can you imagine trying to do that here, the wokeys would have a field day?

Have a look at the link I posted earlier. I'm living in Ireland - there are basically very limited public amenities. There are private, luxury toilets now. 3.50 a poo.
