West Norwood. The local Building Society made UK headlines about the mid 1990s. The bank with the most frequent armed robberies.

I think it was 16 robberies in 12 months ? It made a lot of sense. The staff always looked very nervous.

I have to admit that I haven't visited either Tulse Hill or West Norwood for many, many years, however when I did visit these locations they were far from salubrious,in general the people looked as rough as dingos paws and one got the impression that the SAS had to deliver the milk.

Yes, I'd say that this one can safety be filed under 'PC gone mad'. Many aspects of history don't exactly smell of roses. By all means acknowledge them, but not selectively and if you blot it out, even that opportunity is lost. Time moves on and acknowledgement of an areas name is clearly far removed from applauding a slave owner. For most the family are long forgotten, kicking up a stink now is activist nonsense. It's a pointless gesture that will just rile people up, rather than address anything that needs attention or benefits anyone.

Very well said.

It is PC gone mad. Who really gives a f**k honestly. Tulse Hill is not a celebration of anything, it's just some gaffe in South London. Let's start researching the name origins of everywhere and deciding what people are happy with? Apparently, Norwood was named after some bloke who once ate his dessert with a soup spoon, let's rename that. Bo**ocks.

The Great North Wood.

Seek an apology from the Barbery Pirates who enslaved their relatives in 1631.

To be clear. The slaves taken were the strongest, fittest and brightest. If you lose millions such people over the course of hundreds of years it takes a lot to recover. Africa continues to suffer the effects of such a prolonged drain. So yes, it remains relevant and there is an argument for support to help The continent try to regain some ground.

The only equivalent in Europe I can think of was the Black Death.

Ever read a book?

The slave trade had devastating effects in Africa. Economic incentives for warlords and tribes to engage in the slave trade promoted an atmosphere of lawlessness and violence. Depopulation and a continuing fear of captivity made economic and agricultural development almost impossible throughout much of western Africa.
A large percentage of the people taken captive in Africa were women in their childbearing years and young men who normally would have been starting families. The European slavers usually left behind persons who were elderly, disabled, or otherwise dependent—groups who were least able to contribute to the economic health of their societies.
