This for me really is a case of horses for courses . When in that distant past , when we set up camp in own penalty box and relied on the electric pace of Zaha and Townsend to get us up the pitch players like AWB ,Tompkin and Dann were the best defenders on the planet .(cough)

Move them 20 yards up the pitch aka the Pat Vieira system and those same players become liabilities .

One of the revelations of the season for me has been the way Ward has adapted to the Vieira style of play ,yes we need an upgrade but looking at AWB playing for utd I honestly dont think he would get in our side any longer .

I disagree on this point. As I've noted before tactically in possession we shift to a back 3. Ward/Clyne on the right, Andersen in the centre and Guehi on the left. This allows Mitchell to push further up on the left wing in a wing back role and allows Zaha to push in as a sort of second striker.

AWB's strengths are his recovery pace and tackling, both better than either Ward or Clyne. I think he would be ideally suited to the right side of the back three I have described, providing extra security on the right if our possession breaks down and he'd also compensate for Andersen's lack of pace.

This would however require a great deal of tactical coaching with him, something I think he has lacked at Manchester United. Inmho it's no surprise that AWB isn't the only young player at United that has regressed in the last couple of years (e.g. Rashford) and that's down to poor coaching.

He does however have his faults - it appears he can't cross, he sometimes lack concentration and in the United team he always seems to take the easy option - either a pass backwards or to one of the "superstars". I also think his confidence is gone and taking a step back from "The Greatest Football Club in the World" (lol) would probably do nothing to improve this.

Fundamentally I think AWB could be a good solid right back for a mid table Premier League team if that team acknowledges his limitations but it will take some good coaching and there's no guarantee his experience at United hasn't permanently damaged his confidence.

I mean the first half of your post is literally exactly what we've done with Ward, so yes.
