I'm always amazed by the amount of water that is deposited on the pitch by the sprinklers before the game and at half time, particularly when it has been raining. We noticed at half-time how there was standing water on a section of the Whitehorse half of the pitch. Yep, me too. The sprinklers always look way too much. I s'pose they know what they're doing. I recall the days when the state of Monday's pitch resembled how it was only on the first day of the season. After a few weeks the only bits of green were round the corner flags.

I have worked maintaining golf courses all my life so the pitch is one of the first things I observe and I too could see how much it had deteriorated since the Burnley match. I don’t know for sure but the first thing I thought was that there was leatherjacket damage, it’s the eggs that hatch from crane flies. The grubs eat the roots causing bare and damaged turf. The insecticide that used to control this got discontinued about 3 years ago and football pitches weren’t granted a licence for the new insecticide that was brought onto the market which isn’t as good as the older product anyway. Madness in my eyes that with all the money in football the pitches are in danger of going back to the old days. I feel so much for the groundsmen but it isn’t there fault. I could go on and bore you further but just my thoughts. I've seen bowling greens ruined this way by the lack of an effective treatment. One locally which was pristine in 2020 was a wreck last year.

I hadn't really noticed the state of the pitch when Elpis started this thread, but I admit that today, in the sunshine, it was looking particularly patchy. But, I guess, if it suits the way we're playing, does it matter?

But, I guess, if it suits the way we're playing, does it matter? I think the pitch had a lot to answer for with Andros' injury - watching the replay, his studs seemed to stick in the ground which caused him to twist so awkwardly. Noticed that several other players (on both sides) seemed to pull up short, stumble or slip on it too. Just hope it doesn't cause one of ours a nasty injury!

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Relay the Pitch!!' by becky We need to start a petition to get our groundsman to relay our bloody pitch during this international break!!! It seems to give an uneven bounce and looks patchy in places. Its becoming detrimental to us because we want to play silky football under Vieira. We are getting a lot of plaudits for the way we we played Everton off the park the other day, so imagine what the scoreline could have been with a decent pitch. This is definitely the worst it has looked for a long time.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Relay the Pitch!!' by becky Need longer than an 'international break' to put in a new pitch. It won't be a case of rolling out turf, more likely starting from scratch ie seed and growth. Does look a bit iffy though.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Relay the Pitch!!' by becky A Petition?? Some people are never happy, FA Cup semi final and a decent team shaping up and you’re worried about the pitch. As for detrimental to us?? it might have escaped your notice, but we’ve just hammered Everton and got a hard earned point off City on it.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Relay the Pitch!!' by becky No the petition was tongue in cheek!!! No i do agree, but if you remember, some of our football was incredible in the first half of the season, even if we drew too many games. But we still beat Tottenham 3-0 and Wolves 2-0. But played Leicester off the park 2-2!! likewise Brighton 1-1 and were brilliant against Liverpool and West Ham, even though we got beaten. No i am being churlish!! overall we have been great. I only noticed that the pitch looked rutted and patchy recently
