But this isn’t really about the match referee - it’s about the VAR ref who didn’t have to make a decision in real time, had the benefit of slow motion and several angles and still got it wrong. The VAR often has to make subjective decisions and as a consequence they are open to debate with differing viewpoints.

I think we can all probably agree that it is the inconsistency that is killing the game.If VAR is all about being subjective what is the point?

The league cup final today had 4 disallowed goals. Ended 0-0 then had 22 penalties, 21 of which were almost unstoppable. The modern game needs to take a close look at all this. My fear is the game is becoming too tight. We need the correct result don't we, but the Lukaku offside was absolutely ridiculous ..they seem desperate to not allow teams to score.

However, had that penalty, and it was a penalty, been given, the question would not have been 'Why has the referee made that decision?', it would have been 'Why did Rodri do that?'. Inconsistent, bizarre and baffling decision making once again. Does make you wonder how much the officials are being paid for these decisions?" All fine until you got to the last sentence. BBC???? Really? No way those PC wokes would ever consider it. Even though 99% of football fans must be asking the same question tonight.

I would subjectively suggest that a lot more than £3m is being spent each season on VAR, only it is hidden and the amounts are unknown. However it is those possible payments that are killing football.

In tennis there is a computer system that conclusively and immediately shows the world if a ball is in or out. No explanatory lines or angles taking ages to reach a decision by some guy behind the scenes.

VAR system currently adjudicates on 'Offside' using technology and it is being enhanced as the following link illustrates.

It works better in cricket and rugby too - one of the problems with football is that goals are rarer than wickets or tries so VAR decisions are more likely to affect the result and so cause controversy.

The ball is either in or out. A lot of footballing decisions are obviously a lot more subjective, which I get. Its ones like this weekend that are unexplainable
