We’ll finish about 13th with around 41-44 points, which in my eyes will be a success. At the start of the season I said this season is a transition one and survival is the objective with the following season (22/23) the one where we start to kick on. We have gelled far quicker than anyone could have imagined and have played fantastic football 90% of the time. We’d be right up there if we were a tough more clinical at each end of the pitch. The future is bright with our young stars - next year we’ll have Plange, hopefully Eze back firing and with some luck Ferguson to replace JW. If we can get a decent replacement for Gallagher (or keep him), top 8 next season should be the aim.

Plange only made his debut for Derby in December, has only played 9 games so perhaps will not be ready for the PL next season. Eze has shown his quality but perhaps Vieira doesn't see him fitting into the way he wants the team to play. Ferguson with his injury problems might not get to replace Ward.Besides he is very inexperienced only playing 22 games in his entire 1st team career. The team is in transition as you mentioned, I never expected it to be plain sailing and felt that on our journey we would encounter 'Pitchy seas' from time to time this season. The lowest total of points we have managed since we were promoted is 41. I don’t see us getting that many this season based on our current form. I think it is likely that we will manage 38 or 39 which should be enough.

Should we attain 38 or 39 pts, I suspect many will view this as an under-achievement and perhaps fingers will be pointed to our manager given that we have spent £76 Mill in the transfer market. Prior to the season with the team in transition I was not expecting a place in Europe and did believe there would be some bumps in the road on our journey, but 38/39 pts would be disappointing. Our football deserves 50 points but the reality is likely to be early 40's subject to the next three games.

Edited by Willo (14 Feb 2022 10.36am) Last season we were largely fortunate to stay up playing appalling football and picking up I have to say some very lucky wins. That same luck disappearing and a combination of individual defensive errors have this season cost us badly and it would not be unfair to say we should be 6 points better off than we currently are. We are a team with new tactics which we haven’t entirely got to grips with yet. To me it matters not what our final points total is provided we continue with our progressive style of play and we stay up.

Could be a pretty strong end to the year, as we've got a lot of games against bottom half teams and a few teams around us (Watford twice, Burnley, Newcastle, Leeds and Everton) however; 1 - This is Palace so no doubt we'll be dire against teams we "should" beat and 2 - Those teams could well be scrapping for their lives so will be well up for it. I think we'll struggle to hit 40 points frankly, but regardless considering we were favourites to go down before the year started and all the upheaval in the squad, being led by ultimately a novice manager I really can't see this year as anything but positive frankly.

Edited by Willo (14 Feb 2022 10.36am) If we manage to stay up this year no matter how low our points total then, given our situation at the start of the season, it will be a major success. You, of all people, Willo should not be disappointed should that occur. Like me you have thought, and posted on here, year after year, that relegation was the likely outcome of the season. We spent money because we jettisoned half a team and their high wages, and bought limited experience that had great potential but were not necessarily better initially than those they replaced.

Edited by Willo (14 Feb 2022 10.36am) Why would any points total that avoids relegation this season be disappointing? We are a team/club very much in transition and we’re favourites for relegation. I am sure you were very much in that camp.
