RIP Doris. For those of us of a similar vintage it seemed like we grew up with him and the 'team of the eighties'

Sad news, Paul Hinshelwood was always one of my favourite players. So assured, he'd casually beat his man sometimes making him look stupid in the process, before making a perfect pass. To stand out in a great team like he did shows how special he was. Thanks for all those memories Paul, you'll be remembered by many for years to come.

I will always remember him for that brilliant goal he scored past Ray Clemence v Liverpool. Sadly not recorded so you had to be there. Indeed, I was at that match and was just talking about it with my wife. Such sad news, i met Paul many times when I was friends with the Lyndsay family in New Addington growing up. RIP Paul, sincere condolences to friends and family. A proper decent bloke and club legend. Edited by moylerg (16 Jan 2022 6.12pm)

Doris was the first professional footballer I ever see smoking when I was a kid, even back in the 70’s it was a shock. We followed( or it’s called stalked now) the players into the cafe that used to be where sainsbury’s petrol station is after training one day.

Paul Hinshelwood made the right back position his own in the late Seventies as we were promoted from Division Three to Division One and he retained that position in the top division. He left in 1983 during some of our darkest days. He is 10th in Palace's all-time appearances with 319. Ironically, the only two current players who can overtake him are both right backs in Joel Ward 294 and Nathaniel Clyne on 291. RIP Paul.

Wonderful memories watching him when I was a young lad with my Dad standing on the Whitehorse. RIP and my thoughts to Paul’s loved ones.

I'm pretty sure Clyney hasn't played anything like that number of games for us? Under 200, I think?

Unless my memory is tricking me I seem to recall whilst playing for Spurs Ossie Ardiles smoking on the bench when he was a substitute

He wasn't rated by the fans early on, bit like Terry Fenwick and Jedi, but then it suddenly clicked and he became a great full back, wonderful attitude, always knuckled down and never hid, never saw the screamer v Liverpool, but was at Luton in 79 when he hit one from 40 yards out which sailed up and left then dipped to hit the inside of the near post but bounced out. Great servant and gone too early as others have said. RIP and condolences to his close ones.

I hope there is a minute silence/clapping before the Liverpool match, a true palace and croydon legend RIP
