I think what doesn't help when trying to assess him is that he runs like a giraffe, which makes him look awkward and ungainly, plus his first touch is not always great and he only seems to be able to run for 5 minutes before looking knackered. Aside from the goal I wasn't overly impressed with his performance against Norwich, but I actually thought he did ok when he came on against West Ham. I'm not convinced he suits the way we are playing now, but a good option to cause chaos if you're chasing a game with 30 minutes left. Edited by taylors lovechild (03 Jan 2022 9.12am)

I have been a critic of Mateta, but credit where it’s due, he has improved, he has obviously worked hard on his game, and I can only suppose responded well to coaching. He is still a young player, and further improvement is possible, and the fact that he is now in the first team picture enough to get more minutes on the pitch, shows he could well be capable of reaching even higher levels.

To be fair to him, he made an impact against WH. Unfortunately that's comparative to Benteke. Who adds very little.

From what I've seen I don't think he's better than what we have. The guys on the training ground will know better than all of us.

L'Equipe reporting that he is going to join St Etienne this week. Can only assume we have a replacement lined up if that proves to be the case. Eddie Nketiah or Daryl Dike? [Tweet Link]
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold... |

[Tweet Link] Dike has already joined WBA. Nketiah seems a good shout given the noise around him for the last six months. With Ayew at AFCON I imagine we must have another striker lined up if Mateta is leaving?

All the reports this morning are that Mateta to St Etienne is very close but Palace need to sign his replacement first. If so then we can expect some incoming news sooner rather than later.

Could also potentially open the door to some of our impressive U23 players. There are 2/3 outstanding prospects who would be keen to join the first team and perhaps stake a claim. Mitchell did that only a year ago! Stranger things have happened at CPFC….

I almost think it's a shame he was a loanee with that stipulation on appearances and guaranteed purchases with the way he's performed in his last 2. If it was just a loan with no obligation, or a failed perm 13m transfer, I think he's worth giving the 'Benteke run' to. AKA, Benteke got around 10 games at the start of this season to once again prove he's the Striker he once was, despite it being fairly obvious he isn't. Mateta really put in a lot of effort and determination in the cameo at West Ham and the overhead could've gone in. He's also shown with his Norwich goal that he has something about him but at the same time, you can't risk 13m on about 100 minutes of decent football. These games almost came too late. Oh well, I think it's hugely unlikely he would become the answer but I think there is at least a glimmer of hope, whereas I have shut the door on Benteke. Mateta might actually be good but we'll never know now. I don't think it'll be like losing an Ian Wright or Andy Johnson though, so I think we'll cope.

If they weren’t good enough/ ready for the Premier whilst Mateta was here, him leaving isn’t going to change that. I would guess, if we are letting him go, we have someone lined up to replace him, probably Nketiah.
