I always think it’s a bit harsh saying the Coppell early 90’s team were totally long ball, yes we were solid, sometimes with a bit of a nasty streak and we did bang it forward for Wrighty to chase at times, but if we were totally a long ball team, how come we had two of the best midfielders in the country who forced their way into the England squad? We could play a bit as well. In my opinion the so called ‘team of the 80’s’ around 78-79 were unplayable at times, teams just couldn’t live with our pace and the speed we moved the ball. I’d love to see that team in its prime on the bowling greens they play on today instead of the bumpy mud baths and sand pits they had to put up with back then Edited by monkey (10 Nov 2021 5.45pm)

I think it is. Hopefully we can sustain it and build on it. I was in my early teens when the Venables team developed although I went to all home games and plenty of away games. The real affinity with that team was they came through the youth set up and hence were such a tight unit with a tremendous understanding. For pure footballing talent and ease on the eye they are the two teams that stand out, but it is so difficult to compare as the game has evolved so much. Now if you were talking effective / powerful football then Coppell’s team of the late 80’searly 90’s would win hands down. Edited by Bexley Eagle (10 Nov 2021 8.09pm)

All I'd say is, there were times when we'd have won and there wasn't that elation going home after the match. Leaving a game having outplayed some great footballing teams. It's a fantastic feeling.

I beg to differ, to this day, I don’t think I’ll ever forget that day when we outclassed that great Ipswich side at selhurst, we stuffed them 4-1, still in my opinion our best performance in my time. We’d just beaten Derby 4-0 as well. Beating the European champions in Forest, I’ll never forget the excitement of the bus ride home after these games. made all the more special by the fact that not so long ago we were playing the likes of Mansfield, York, Wrexham, etc But I will say, after the last 2 or 3 years, it is so nice coming away from selhurst having enjoyed every game so far Edited by monkey (11 Nov 2021 9.45am)

So much has changed over the years, and is continuing every season, that genuine comparisons are impossible. The PL has totally transformed the game. The playing surfaces are better. Fitness levels much higher. Diets are individually managed. Off pitch support and physio are an art form. Who knows how "the team of the 80S" would have performed in today's environment? What I do like about today's set up is the versatility. In the past, we have been predictable with our line up, so teams could easily prepare to play us. Now we are more flexible and teams don't know what to expect. Keeping them guessing means uncertainty.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

We're playing very attractive football at the moment. No doubt about it, and getting the results too. Best ever? Probably. But difficult to make comparisons with past teams because so much has changed. The pitches, the balls, the quality of opposition and coaching. Consider all these things (and more probably) and we certainly should look better than, say, Terry Venables' team. Everything about the game in general today is so much more structured and 'professional'. Like most sports really. Suffice to say, I'm enjoying watching us play stylish, attacking football more today than the last few seasons for sure. good point, match us up the to even the best team of the 70s/80s/90's - any league and we'll see a contrast - football has evolved big time. What I would say, for me, is how I felt at the time and the team playing to the best of it's ability. Recently under freedman/Holloway or Dowie, Coppell etc, we were playing to the best of our ability. So with that in mind, a prem club playing to the best of its ability has to trump the others, however, we are signing a different class of player... for a different price. We had promotion at stake, for 2013 so that was a factor - what's the aim here, a cup run? if we get a cup that to me trumps promotion. Glory days.

Not our most exciting team but our most hardworking team. The 91 squad was pretty special from that point of view too but this lot takes the biscuit. I do love my stats. They can deceive of course but this one I think ranks in the killer category. Scroll down here to defensive actions and look at pressures - especially in midfield. Table topping there and that explains our great defensive record too from XGC (one of those stats I'm a tad sceptical of).

The stats say the 91 team was the best team, as they finished 3rd in the league. No other team has come anywhere near that achievement. Its a challenge for the current team to get near, what that team did. There is no doubt they are playing nice football and receiving plaudits, but its results that count.

True in a way about results But the league is very different now. It's become a de facto Super League with around 10 clubs who can expect top 10 football more or less every season. Spurs and Arsenal are. squabbling over making 6/7th. Things were much more fluid back in 91. Financial doping hadn't been invented by Blackburn at that stage and it was possible to dream of a top 3 finish and actually make it. Below that it's way more competitive too. Look at the clubs in the lower half of the table and they all have hugely expensive squads and/or debt mountains. Even if you go back to when we last came up there's a stark difference in the league. This was the bottom end Southampton In a way the best way of comparing then and now is to look at WH and Villa. WH now have and fill a 50,000 seater stadium and Villa have spent over 300 million on a great squad. We've come a way too from being owned by 3 dudes who just wanted to save their local club but no question we've been outdistanced and compete on a less level playing field.

Nothing has really changed in football. The top teams are still the top teams. The same protagonists fight out for the major Euro trophies. The only difference is that all of the teams have more money, but only relative to their positions in the pecking order. There will always be the one offs such as Leicester but generally since FFP, you don’t have to look past City Utd Liverpool or Chelsea for your PL winners, with a small group behind them hanging onto their coat tails. I read a lot about this being the best Palace team ever. As much as I am enjoying it, the stats don’t agree with that and it doesn’t matter how much money you throw at our club we will never be a City or Chelsea because the rules no longer allow that to happen, City being the last on the gravy train. I’m not sure how Newcastle will be able to buy a team as the ability to spend big is based on earnings and they have no European income which is what teams rely on to allow them to buy the best players. In short, has football got better overall, yes it probably has, certainly fitness levels and ball control skills appear to be better overall, however the best players still go to the best teams who win the most trophies which allows them to remain the dominant forces in the game and I can’t see that changing any time soon. There will always be a bit of variance of success for the top teams because they have turnover of players like everyone else and they sometimes get it wrong, but they are always there or thereabouts. My hope is that one year we do a Leicester and exceed expectations for the entire season, but for now I’m happy to see us giving it a go in every match.

I concur with Eaglecoops reading of the situation but would add: Outside of the Big 4 (Spurs and Arsenal have dropped off the top table for the time being) we see teams which have spent hundreds of millions to try and buy success but have failed miserably - the prime examples are Everton with Villa not far behind. Arsenal have recently spent big to try and get back to the top table. Time will tell whether or not they will be successful. West Ham are an interesting case. They spent a fortune under Pellegrini and got nowhere. It's taken Moyes's second coming to get them going (and a couple of astute signings). With the 17th largest stadium of teams currently in the PL we continue to punch above our weight. Prudent management by Parish and astute recent signings (including the new manager) point to us being well-placed to continue doing so.
