Might have missed it, but haven't seen anyone else make this point Goal Machine, although I think you're right about still having the keeper to beat. I was furious with him, but it wasn't as straightforward a chance as some choose to believe. Should have at least made the goalkeeper make a save

Have been a big Benteke fan on HOL, but got to say he had an absolute shocker when he came on last night. We needed to defend from the front and was not mobile enough to challenge for possession. The Weed defenders were breezing past him without him putting up any resistance. He had a couple of misguided headers which went nowhere near Palace players. He had that farcical short corner which held up for less than a second and he must have given ball away at least 5 times. Other than the ball to Ayew, which let’s be honest was a basic pass for a pro, he had a negative impact on the team. He’s dangerous when we cross the ball but we don’t do that. Expected more from a man trying to get his place back in the team. Re Ayew, we all know his limitations. He’s a useful squad player but will soon be replaced by Olise/Eze. Good dribbler but doesn’t add much else. His miss wasn’t as bad as people are making out, he still had the keeper to beat who was well positioned. Edited by Goal Machine (28 Sep 2021 6.30pm) I agree with most of this. Personally I would have given Mateta a run out, as he is more mobile and would have pressed more

Positionally it wasn't too dissimilar to the goal he scored against the Spam where he calmly chipped the keeper. Seems to me he has lost a little bit of confidence in front of goal and is trying too hard to make amends. He has goals in him, we've seen that, and once he gets on the scoresheet I think he'll go on a run.

Second the broken record comment. It’s beyond boring now. They have their limitations, but they’re palace abs they’re what we’ve got. Benteke should’ve had an assist which is more than EO achieved. Lanzo and others hate Benteke and want him gone. Others think he’s worth having in the squad. Shall we all move on?

You're like a broken record. I think most agree that Ayew is playing out of position. The Manager is selecting him because he thinks he's currently the best man for the job. Olise only recently returned from injury and is unproven at this level. PV is breaking him in gently - I realise from reading your posts that this is a concept that you find difficult to grasp. As for Benteke, look at it this way. We spent big on Edouard. We potentially have spent big on Mateta, although I doubt we will see him signed permanently. We don't have unlimited funds. So re-signing Benteke made absolute sense. Edouard started last night and looks set to get a run in the team. Mateta is assessed, as are all the players, on a daily basis. If he's not getting game time there is a reason for it. As for Rob Street, I think he's a big, bustling grafter but I don't think he's even remotely close to a first team spot. And I'll go on record now and say that I don't think he'll make it at Palace although I hope I'm proven wrong.

Shall we all move on? But he didn't have an assist did he so in fact he didn't achieve more than EO did at all... Pretty pointless point you're making. Nobody is blaming Benteke for the loss as that would be ridiculous.. But it was clear to see he was slow and lazy when he came on.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

Would have enjoyed the Spurs presentation (20 then 22) rather than the Brighton presentation (22 then 20). When Mr B starts a match (since Roy focused his mind) he does trouble and tire defenders. Replace him with Mr E and our opponents become more fearful. Go the other way without a Mr E goal, and things just coast along. I suspect that with a Mr E start and a goal Mr B will come on as a "starter" and work his socks off - inflicting fear on the opponents. I trust in P.V. and the good surprises I expect him to provide. He should've had an assist.

Whatever your view on Bentenke surely it must have been frustrating for everyone having seen our forwards force mistakes all game by closing down their defenders to see him trot on and make a half-hearted effort at closing the defenders down. I mean, he was at the game, so he could see that tactic was ruffling their feathers. Is it a fitness issue? A lack of willingness? Whatever it is I personally found it disappointing that he didn't put himself about.

At any level of the game, if you swap in an attacking player when ahead with 10 mins left the instruction is always to empty the tank. To provide some fresh legs against tired defenders. Unfortunately the Brighton back line must have been pretty happy as they moved past him with ease, and were never under real pressure. I've said it many time, but effort costs nothing. And if he cant do it for 10 mins after losing his place when can he do it.
