Indeed it's not a case of cheap labour from Europe, it's labour from Europe. HGV drivers are relatively well paid. Despite the fact that we have unemployed people in the UK there is a shortage of people with specific skills in many areas. Fruit pickers, (yes they are skilled), NHS staff, etc are all required. The fact that the government took no steps to train people to do this work over the past decade can only be explained by incompetence and arrogance.

If somebody has good pay and decent conditions and enjoys their job, they'll do it. I'd say that the evidence is pointing to there being a lot of Eastern European lorry drivers. They would have got their licences from the armed services. If they're not coming back, it's suggesting that there's something equivalent or better for them to do. Perhaps being asked to register p1ssed some off, but there's obviously more going on. I have an HGV licence but haven't used it for years. Nor would I, as the traffic would give me a heart attack from the stress. The traffic here, combined with the state of the roads is awful. Anyway, have a much better job these days - another reason.

Don't panic Captain Mainwaring! Also looks like huge increase in imports of Turkeys from Poland and France due to UK farms not having the resources to produce their own this year. Nothing to do with Brexit of course, lol.

The media have created this fuel stupidity. It’s been fine for the last couple of weeks with just some pumps closed. Now the media have caused panic buying and filling up cars with fuel they don’t need now. And the issues in Britain go further than we’ve messed everything up by reducing imported cheaper labour. It can be argued that is the underlying issue.

You think the CO2 shortage is because of Brexit? Maybe you should look at your green chums. The gas shortage has closed fertiliser factories which create CO2. The CO2 is used to stun and package meat. I’m intrigued to know how much this is because of Brexit. I’ll wait. Lol

What happens after panic buying of fuel is when these idiots don’t need the fuel they don’t use in their cars, the petrol stations have no queues

At least you won't struggle with your capitalist existence along with all your philanthropic ways!

Brexit sent them home and now we are trying to find a face saving way to beg them back- nothing to do with capitalism mate! Oh for the days when you could get a full shop in the supermarket, a doctors appointment, turn your heating on and enjoy hot water every day, thats the choice our old folks living alone have, yes, its working well mate!

Certainly seemed to be a reason in 2019

If the driver shortage is all down to Brexit, how come that it's only reared it's head now, some21 months after we left the EU?

Things were fine up to 3 months ago.......

Perhaps not all down to Brexit, but Rod McKenzie of the RHA, states that the 20,000 European drivers who have left the country have left a big hole!
