Stalin - The Court of the Red Tsar ,

by Simon Sebag Montefiore

And you realise Russia was run by a paranoid madman genius. Like a cross between the Yorkshire Ripper, Shakespeare and Machiavelli.

Just read "Diary of a Nobody". Amazingly funny for a book that's 120 years old. As for short stories, look no further than "The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway - Finca Vigia Edition". Well-written stories by a true genius. Also anything by George Orwell or Emile Zola.

Why worry about TODAY when TOMORROW will be even worse.

Diary of a Nobody is brilliant. Almost at the level of P.G.Wodehouse.

Simon Jordan - Be careful what you wish for

I know its not the same type of book you listed but well worth a read for any Palace fan.

Agreed as is Mark Bright’s autobiography. Hilaire also has some very interesting insights

I need a new book from the library. Rather than stick with the old favourites - James Patterson rarely disappoints and Lee Child's Jack Reacher stories are fine, but a bit samey - I thought I'd try something new.

Anyone care to recommend a book you've enjoyed recently? There are so many new authors now it all gets a tad confusing. Bit like choosing a Farrow and Ball paint I imagine.

I've read Osman's Thursday Murder Club and I chuckled in odd places, but thought it was lightweight. Currently reading Once Upon A Time In Hollywood which is same as the film except Tarantino adds little anecdotes about his favourite films, directors and actors. A fun read.

To start things off, I thoroughly recommend I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. Suggested to me by a friend who is a Palace Ambassador and it's topical (although published in 2013), as it tells of a vaccine proof virus created by a Saudi in the aftermath of 9/11. Also remarkable because it's Hayes' first novel. Thrilling.

So, use this thread as a place to recommend or search for good books. Over to you and I look forward to selecting a new and interesting title.

Just wanted to say a quick '' thank you '' for recommending this book - I can't put it down !

You're very welcome NEILLO. Glad you're enjoying it. I was surprised by how well
it's written as a first novel.

There have been some really good suggestions from everybody and a wide range of material. Great stuff.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Crime Novels there are a couple of authors i enjoy reading;
Peter James - any of Roy Grace series but try and read in order. Set in Brighton and a couple of later ones include crimes that happened in Amex stadium.
Ann Cleaves - crime novels set in Shetland isles

Ian Fleming's War. This book answers the question where did the idea for James Bond come from?

I'm reading Roger Lewis's Erotic Vagrancy about Richard Burton & Liz Taylor and it's...er, something. His biographies are always an experience (his Peter Sellers book was interesting in its way but the Anthony Burgess one was nothing but a hatchet job).
Anyway this one is eye-opening if only for the sheer hedonism and opulence of their life together. Lewis isn't at all a fan of Taylor's and she's portrayed as a total nightmare - complaining she couldn't have a fireplace on her private plane was almost the least of it.

'The Dark Cloud' by Fred Hoyle. A legendary scientist who writes with all the aplomb of a novelist. I'm going to be trying some Edward St.Aubyn soon - both recommended to me by a very reliable source.
