Ha ha, you might be on to something YT.

Yep, crazy. When did 'assists' become such a major feature anyway? I'm sure in the olden days we just used to discuss a nice pass rather than give a player part credit for a goal.

I saw one the other day - attempted tackles. I could play against Messi and attempt 1000 tackles without ever getting the ball.
We’ve had a few defenders over the years who could do well in this category.

It amused me that the player the ball came off to go to Schick was credited with an “assist”.

It's just one example of how ridiculous football has become, sadly. I mean an "assist" FFS...players being celebrated for 5 "assists" in a season etc. My primary school football teacher (surely the inspiration for Ron Bassett) is surely turning in his grave!

According to this site Wilf achieved two “assists” last season.
These stats are obviously meaningless but someone must be paying attention to them.

I think they’ll keep edging games one nil until they meet a decent team, when they’ll get stuffed.
Anybody remember Harry Kane having a good international?

We can go a long way here, if only because favourites are drawn together.

I think quarter finals possibly semis not sure if Trippier Stones McGuire etc. are great technically.

Been watching the Schick goal really brilliant.

You obviously need to track attempted tackles in order to work out a tackle success rate, which is fairly useful in comparing defenders. Interestingly (or not!) I read that Wan-Bissaka has been the leading player in Europe at this for four consecutive seasons. You are right that attempted tackles is a nonsense statistic on it's own though.

Another one I found interesting;

285 players made 50+ tackles in Europe's top five leagues last season, the top two for 'true' tackle success were;

Tyrick Mithcell - 74.42%
Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 73.95%

*True tackle success means you won back posession of the ball, as opposed to making a successful tackle which goes off for a throw-in etc.

If we top our group (which is v likely now we've beaten Croatia), we run into 2nd place from Portgual/France/Germany in the last 16, so we're very much a 'victim' of the draw as opposed to a beneficiary.

Sides like Spain and Belgium have much better routes to the later stages (assuming they top their groups).

See, I don't think it was a brilliant goal. The keeper basically made it an open goal. The scorer noticed during the first half that this was the case, so when he took advantage of it, it was a calculated choice and not s spur of the moment thing. Plus surely any professional footballer being paid thousands a week should be able to float a ball into a goal from the half-way line.

In summary; it was poor decision-making by the goalkeeper and an abject failure by the coaches to tell the goalie to...err...protect his goal.

Watching the Portugal game and it struck me that Ronaldo really doesn't look much older than when we first saw him at Man U.

Not quite as sharp as he was though. He's missed a couple so far (first half). But, still a great athlete.

Agree P. O. G.

Is it me, or is the Hungarian Manager, Ollie's brother?
