The very best well established brands and products rarely need to advertise, yes. Because of course, they don’t need brand building and brand awareness advertising. But if they’re new then you’ll find them advertising to their target markets of higher spenders and socioeconomic groups using targeted advertising strategies and media. It would be interesting to hear of any brands that have never advertised and aren’t local or small one shop retailers. A lot of advertising is because the competition advertise. Or trying to gain market share the when the one with the bigger market share will just advertise more in response, unless the advertising campaign is particularly clever. Intelligently thought out ones or just the Pepsi challenge. Can't remember when I last saw a Rolls Royce commercial.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Yes, that's the point Midlands, but it's the style of advertising these days that makes you wonder what they're thinking. Give me the old Martini ads any day.

Yes, new products that may be even better than the existing order certainly still need adverting I can think of DVD's taking over from vinyl for example. (though I agree with those who are fond of vinyl) Most products will still need to advertise but we can all think of a few iconic brands that have already gained 'mind share' via the culture.

Two brands that annoy me intensely, one because it has a virtual monopoly, the other because they too have a virtual monopoly but I just don't understand why people don't try something different. No.1 is Colgate

There aren't any funny adverts anymore, companies are so scared of offending anyone. They so political correct nowadays, with just about every advert ensuring that they all races included. I showed my wife the Harp advert from 80's about Lionel Blair's haircut. She is from Ireland and had never seen it. Most adverts just annoy the hell out of me now, and it has the opposite effect. I would deliberately not buy a product because of their advert. example : That god awful woman on the Oral B advert telling me "I didn't even know that Oral B made a toothpaste".

CARS . . . Filmed somewhere abroad, left hand drive, foreign number plates & god awful voice overs. Are there ANY British made cars anymore?
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

The lack of variety in today's advertising is seriously shocking. I barely watch TV, but when Palace are on Sky: - Car advert Rinse and repeat. I seem to see nothing but the above. Adverts were so much better 20 or so years ago. Funny, intelligent, a bit of effort going into it. Go and look at some 70s or 80s youtube advert compilations (sad, I know). It's just so vacuous now... a bit like society, I guess.
