Perhaps we need to distinguish between youngsters who were with us in the U23s and U18s before we gained Academy status (or it became known we were applying for it) and those who have come in since. Those currently out on loan in the lower leagues (which includes a U23 striker at National League, Torquay!) are players who fit the former category. A number of promising players have joined since last season, including Reece Hannam, who has been on the first team bench for the last 4 games as cover for PvA in Mitchell's absence even though both Schlupp and Riedewald could fill the LB position if required. To put it in a nutshell, we are now attracting a better quality of youngster and that should provide dividends in future years especially if we can remain in the PL.

Of course it is not guaranteed, not much in football can be guaranteed. You could spend £50m and get Rhian Brewster and Aaron Ramsdale and the sack. Whilst i agree with the jist of your post, the bit in red makes it fall down(imo). We have currently on our books 2 players that were PL proven, High Fees & High Wages . . . Benteke & Sakho
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Can I just point out before we start on the Hodgson wont play youth thread again how well the 4 players out on loan are doing, the ones dinosaur Hodgson won’t play. Kirby started two matches at Tranmere and seems to have been taken off at half time in both, similar with Pierick who is been kept out of the Kilmarnock first team by the talent of Kyle Lafferty. Sam Woods has been a sub for Plymouth and Scott Banks seems to be doing ok in the Scottish championship . Hopefully ,they are all learning from the experience hopefully they will all come good but let’s not kid ourself these are premier league ready players. We have only just got the top grade academy and the young players are simple not there to play but hopefully they will come through over the next few years. A pal I used to work with (former Palace academy player, now playing non league) told me previously that in his opinion, often the difference between Premier League and League 2 is luck and getting the opportunity. His general frustration is that a lot of youngsters don't get a chance over a foreign import or more established player. If we look at AWB, he would never have got a sniff it it wasn't for an injury crisis. He could be on loan at somewhere like Oldham now if he didn't get the lucky break. I think back to watching Hiram Boeteng coming on as a sub away at Swansea a few years ago and thought he was great. I don't think he ever got the chance again. Often you've just got to throw a kid in to see how they cope, will they sink or swim. Some will thrive and take their game up a notch to a new level. Now is the risk free time of the season to take this sort of gamble.

Benteke & Sakho Aright I might be pushing it a bit, we did in the early years make some ‘marque’ signings Cabaye, Beneteke and Sakho, but in this context of this argument about buying players with proven ability over taking a risk on potential they fit the bill of proven premier league players who were over looked for one reason or another . Beneteke had played 130 games at Villa and Liverpool and scored 51 goals ,Klopp wanted shot of him. Sakho was similar, a proven player who had played a few season at Liverpool which had been limited due his knee injuries, how they have worked out is a different matter.

Don’t think Roy is to blame for this one. No affinity with the club - clearly no loyalty = shouldn’t be surprised.

I'm assuming someone's already highlighted Mandela Egbo's move a few years ago. I can't remember who he plays for now? (poss in the US), but he never got going at Monchengladbach, literally played about one game. We need to market ourselves better with young players. We should be a better option than Chelsea, and yet we are no more likely to play young prospects than they are.

For every Egbo there is a Jadon Sancho or Jude Bellingham who did move to Germany and have done well out there

If we have matches remaining after hitting 40 points, wouldn't that be a golden opportunity to give some youngsters a try? I can't think of a reason why not but I expect Roy will. Edited by Eaglehamster (18 Mar 2021 3.54pm)
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |
