Not often I agree with you Jim Years ago I worked with every Local Authority in England. They were incredibly mixed in their abilities. The worst by far were the Authorities that had been under the same party leadership for prolonged periods. Whilst sometimes I have no choice, I am always extremely cautious about hiring people from Local Authorities. They tend to hire weak people and then not manage underperformance properly. Sorry to anyone reading this that works for a Council, you are obviously the exception. Not just weak people. Filling up your employee numbers to suit a certain political criteria. Without wondering if they can actually do the job for the masses.

It's not just Croydon Council, Lewisham tried to CP the land around Millwall for a major re-development. The favoured company was an offshore pop up with zero history and unknown owners. However it was widely believed that the mayor's brother was involved. Anyway thanks to Millwall supporters and a reporter from the Guardian the whole sorry mess was exposed for what it was. And yes the Tories are just as bad at dealing out public money to their mates. The Lewisham council fiasco does raise one issues. How can it possibly be right that public money can be offered to a company whose owners are hidden. The rules most change we have to have transparency.

For many years, there have been too many clowns in the circus we call the public sector. They should be held to account for their acts of gross financial mismanagement not allowed to run away with gold plated pensions. I spent all my career in the public sector, is it a circus? Probably. Are there too many clowns? Certainly at Senior Management level, I do believe lower down the chain get a raw deal from the media and public, as they are lumped together with Management. Gold plated pension? Certainly not me and again Senior Managers undoubtably. You would be surprised how low the average PS pension is

My favourite 'Brick by Brick' story is how they build a load of flats intended for a Government co-ownership scheme. All goes well up until the point when people have had a look around and are keen to go ahead before they realise they have not even registered to be eligble for the scheme. Oh and the rumours are that as part of their plans to encourage people to shop locally they are planning on abolishing the hours free parking that exists in places like Coulsdon and so on. LOL. You could not make this stuff up. To be fair to the new leader (and I have to state a personal interest in that I know her) she has put her hands up and said the fault lays with the Council itself so she does deserve some kudos for that.

One of the major issues arising from this financial mess is the lack of scrutiny by councillors, who effectively acted as cheerleaders for those such as Tony Newman and Paul Scott. And this includes the new head of the council, Hamida Ali. The quality of councillors varies enormously, both in terms of capability and commitment to the role. Local government is now a complex operation but the councillors are often ill equipped to challenge decisions and the use of patronage by means of allowances ties them into the decisions made at the top. Quite frankly, in this era of gesture politics, they should all give back the allowances they have received in recent years. They simply haven't been up to the job.

Local elections have the biggest impact on your life, but no one bothers paying attention or voting. Meanwhile we have hundreds of pages on Trump/Biden.

Once upon a time local businessmen joined the masons and became friends with local council officials which is how they got the plum contracts, back handers etc. Today that still goes on and you hear stories how ethnic groups gets jobs in key council departments such as housing and then recruit and promote their friends, relatives etc until they have a power base. Meet the new boss same as the old boss.

I think he may be quite young given his comments on Gordon Brown. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your home town. I used to be until I moved somewhere else and found out pretty much anywhere is better than Croydon. The thing he might realise when he moves away is that you shouldn't have to even think about safety in public, it should be a given fact that you should be safe all the time without having to worry. You spelt ridiculous incorrectly.
