No, cricketers don’t get paid enough but I’d go for pop stars chipping in. Everyone needs to help and the wealthy need to get involved. They never will of course on this sort of scale as the majority are all way too selfish with their money even though they could never spenc it in 10 generations. You get me wrong if you think I agree with the government voting down the suggestion because I don’t. We also need a plan in place to start repaying the money we constantly borrow and that needs to start at the top of the tree and not midway down which I fear will be what actually happens. You seem to be conflating sportspeople and entertainers with the actual super rich in society. Footballers tend to be some of the most charitable wealthy people in the country - most of them are working class boys who have experienced hardship and they’ve got far more awareness as to the realities of life at the bottom. Secondly, they are PAYE employees and so already some of the biggest tax contributors in the country. It’s not their job to solve this.

With Labour in power obviously we would not be having this debate. That’s right, because there would be no money left to pay anyone.

You must know different footballers to me then, I know quite a few who are very happy with their new found wealth and equally happy to keep it all to themselves. My point was that it should be all rich people coming to the aid of this situation and we happened to be discussing a footballers contribution hence my original comments. The government do not have a magic wand that can get rid of trillions of debt, so a hell of a lot of mega rich people out there need to look themselves in the eye and contribute a bit more to the country that has made them wealthy. If that contribution has to be forced out of them by government legislation then so be it, but you just know they will be protected by offshore companies and hidden accounts.

I wonder how much tax he pays on the additional £10m a year he earns. But admittedly, most people the super rich are their because of inherited wealth. Like poor old Elon Musk who's parents owned a diamond mine. People who make money from sports the arts make it through sheer talent. Pretty much all wealthy business men aren't really that much more talented than the people they employ. It's just they had huge trust funds so failure wouldn't be catastrophic. Labour didn't bring social justice. They brought easy credit making it simple for people to get buy-to-let homes sending house prices skyrocketing and compounding poverty on the poorest. Followed by a huge crash. Labour has been trying to claim that they were the victim of a world wide credit crunch they could do nothing about, yet the Tories are having to deal with a pandemic. Best thing Labour can do is stop bitching about how the Tories are the nasty party and how all their voters are evil. They need to start regaining trust by kicking out momentum and proving they can be trusted with the economy. Edited by jeeagles (22 Oct 2020 3.19pm)

The debate is who should feed the children in the school holidays. Something that's unprecedented. We've not had 10 years of Tory rule. We've had less than a year of a Tory government. The previous one was 10 years are made up of about 3 years worth of Tory rule and 7 of coalitions. The Labour leadership has been completely inept over most of the last decade. 10 years ago the Tories couldn't even win an election even though Labour had made a complete balls up of the economy. Perhaps be angry at the people who voted for Ed instead of David, then wouldn't chuck Corbyn out of the party despite being told time and time again that the electorate hated him.... but it's easier to blame the Tory Government than to take accountability. Oh, I must've been dreaming it then. In this dream I'm sure there was an Old Etonian in number 10, followed by a woman who looked a bit like Thatcher, then another Etonian. They sold off the health service, cut public spending and gave billionaires a tax cut, telling us it was for the sake of the economy. Funny thing was, by the end of the dream the economy was even worse than when they got in! Thank god it was a dream though. Else God knows how bad things would be.

And the last year has been an unmitigated success, with Boris showing himself to be the expert at leading us through a crisis, the economy roaring, unemployment down and business booming. Or something like that! BTW I make no excuses for Blair. He was a Tory in a red rosette. Edited by serial thriller (22 Oct 2020 3.53pm)

Edited by jeeagles (22 Oct 2020 3.19pm) Thatcher de-regulated the financial markets and that's where the credit boom started. Labour did bring prosperity and social justice particularly on sensible policies cutting crime and sure-start, properly funded public services. It is quite an eye-opener to see, after all the tory years of private wealth and profit, that nationalisation of railway services is being re-introduced. When the going gets tough, the tories get lost........

Problem with those in the left of the Labour Party is that they dont understand that people can have their own opinions, but they can't have their own facts.

So we can get the footballers to pay for hungry kids, maybe pop stars can pay for victims of domestic abuse, cricketers can pay for housing the homeless and the government can spend the savings on giving billionaires another tax break? Good boy, you're learning quickly! Keep at it and we won't have to listen to your trite left wing dogma for too much longer. Which will be wonderful. No-one needs to go hungry, due to the welfare system. It is a parent's prime responsibility to keep their kids safe and fed. All the rest comes after that.
