How do people feel the BBC is doing in this crisis?

Are you all just as cynical as ever?

I think it is showing just how valuable a national asset it is. Keeping us informed without spin, calmly and objectively.

I am listening to Radio 4 and 5 a lot during the day, due to my current task and both are brilliant. Lots of uplifting stories with presenters who clearly care. The way they have adapted is great.

For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.

Even a broken clock is correct twice a day.

I am purposely avoiding the news. I would rather not spend my day listening to BBC and LBC I get that for some people it's important but I think I have grasped the idea stay in doors and wash your hands.

I have no idea how the BBC is getting on I am preferring to listen to music and read plus help my neighbours.

The only good thing I know that BBC has done is delay charging the over 75's.

Dont forget, Above Us The Waves, The Cruel Sea, The Longest Day, Bridge To Far.

It seems to me the 'Brits' really knew how to make a damm good war film & not distort the truth, unlike our cousins across the pond.

A bit of trivia. Richard Todd played the part of a Colonel Howard in The Longest Day. In real life he was a paratrooper who took part in the assault on Pegasus Bridge to relieve Colonel Howard’s men so someone else was cast in the part of “Richard Todd” .

Not sure about your last paragraph. My parents were friendly with a chap who fought at Arnhem, he was only one of two survivors of his company. He was captured and then shot in the hand. He spoke very highly of the medical treatment he received from the Germans but would never watch the Longest Day as he believed that the portrayal of the US troops was far from reality, he really didn’t rate them at all. Told stories of US prisoners giving Red Cross food parcels to guards in exchange for better treatment.
This chaps photo appeared in the book, as he was preparing to parachute.
Overall I agree with the assessments of the films, I do like a good “oldie” war film

I find it amusing that in the major news bulletins they show the Prime Minister / Health Secretary taking questions from Laura Kuenssberg but not from Robert Peston or the Sky reporter whether hers is the most relevant question or not

Probably because showboating Peston would take the entire Q&A session up with a long-winded pointless "question" that is actually really a statement of his agenda, and then say "sorry, we're out of time". Insufferable prick.

...and yet, despite that, I did hear him ask a question on one of the daily pressers. It put me to sleep.

"Hold until relieved"

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Dont know if suitable but the patriot and braveheart.

Braveheart is terrible but great fun. From what you have said - 'All Quiet on the Western Front' is brilliant. They remastered the original recently, you might be able to find that. So ahead of its time - made in inter-war Germany. No Ernest Borgnine.
You must know Kubrick's early 'Paths of Glory' with Kirk Douglas. If you don't,drop everything and watch it now. Or watch it sometime in the next couple of weeks, months or whatever.

^^^ The Bit In Red ^^^

I completely forgot about this film, i will now go & find it from somewhere. The 'futility of war' springs to mind.
