A truly great film. Not in it's story or acting perhaps but as the first film to be made in 3D it was worth watching just for that alone. I saw it in 3D at our local cinema and again at the IMAX and it was a truly stunning spectacle

Avatar did use CGI extensively , again not the first but certainly the most commercially successful. Cameron and Lucas are not great directors but they are great film makers as they have pushed the boundaries of technology mainly because they hate actors and would rather do without them.

OK Mr Picky. It may not have been the first 3D movie but it was the first to be filmed using advanced technology that emulated the way that the human eye sees things. I haven't been to the cinema for a few years so don't know whether the technology has improved yet again but Avatar was a stunning film to watch even if the story was basically the old "America wants so America takes" story rehashed for the millionth time with a bunch of wooden actors

A few I somehow haven't seen yet, but would maybe like to, are: 2001: A Space Odyssey Others I have no interest in seeing include: Either Mamma Mia! Maybe I'm just not one for three hour films!

Blade Runner used to be my favourite film and I used to have an HD-DVD box set of four slightly different versions of the film. The first two Alien films are well worth watching too

The first two Alien films are well worth watching too I might give the impression I'm a sci-fi fan (I probably look a bit like one as well!), but I'm really not. I usually prefer dramas and comedies rooted in reality rather than fantasy. I loved the original Star Wars trilogy as a kid, and watched the old Star Trek now and again, but not much else. I do fancy myself as a bit of a film buff though, and films like Blade Runner and Alien have always been very well acclaimed. They are often listed among people's favourite films so I should really give them a go. Cheers for the recommendation!
