If social media companies curate their content then that is editing and so in effect makes them a publisher and subject to the laws therein. If they are just a platform then they are no different to the telephone lines and they should not be policing content, just as the telephone lines are not policed....not officially anyway. All these silicon valley companies benefited at their start by being classified as platforms and initially that's how they ran their businesses. They no longer deserve that categorization, simply because it is no longer true. Edited by Stirlingsays (22 Feb 2020 5.27pm)

They claim impartiality but that has never been true. I have never cared that much about the political side of thier impartiality but they have always promoted what they want and what they want is high views and low controversy so they push it hard. High controversy stuff gets buried. There is a massive legal case right now with the lgbtq community getting their videos buried and thanks to an amazing community testing the algorithm, it looks like they might win. If they do then youtube will have to implement some massive reforms that ironically will benefit ideology channels...

Google want to turn Youtube into some kind of Netflick's clone. They want to push all the political and controversial cultural stuff off. If this alphabet group win then I congratulate them as they shouldn't have to operate under absurd restraints when no one is compelled in their videos or forced to watch them. I would hope that their activists also hold a similar attitude towards all identity content. Unfortunately I think we both know how this is going to go though.....there is going to be a form of digital segregation at least in the short term.

I agree but I really hope you are wrong about digital segregation...that usually leads to echo chambers and ignorance at best, political extremism at worst... The netflicks comparison is spot on by the way, everything they do is to steer them in that direction and its failing horribly. Youtubes CEO has done a terrible job since being in charge and every conceivable type of youtuber hates what she has done with it...

Facebook's CEO Zuckerberg recently said that he wants to move away from censorship and I can only hope that he follows through on that instead of it being meaningless platitudes.

I assume the term ‘echo chamber(s)’ applies just as much to the right as as it does to the left. Can’t be doing with double standards now can we. Edited by SW19 CPFC (22 Feb 2020 11.58pm)
Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons. |

The point should be made of course that echo chambers aren't a new or digital phenomenon it's just that the Internet enables echo chambers far more easily than before. The movement by the social media giants to censor in recent years has only accelerated and heightened echo chambers and essentially there is no real mediation between significantly different worldviews. I'd imagine if this exchange was a video streaming conversation that you'd probably not wish to discuss even this milk toast topic due to fear of association from activists. Ally all this to identity politics as the emerging movements on both wings (with only the non white flavour being supported by institutions) the reality of digital segregation ....as with house price segregation just seems an inevitable consequence. I can tell you that the dissident right are just waiting for their Soros.....When that happens, things will get interesting. It's unfortunate that I'm an old git because that's an exciting time....Not a nice time or even perhaps not successful....but at least a time more contested than now. It will be Isandlwana or it will be Rorke's drift....but that's when the die is cast. Edited by Stirlingsays (23 Feb 2020 1.58pm)

Youtube Channels for those on the right side The right side of what I ask? For those of a certain age the best thing on YouTube isn't political but Daryl's House which is a series of jam sessions of musicians at the studio in Daryl Hall's house. Take a break from bloody politics and watch some episodes of Daryl's House instead
