His position on Trump was to reflect what he believed are the standards of decency and democratic process held by Parliament and state what is a fact. That addressing Parliament is not a right, it is an honour bestowed by Parliament to those they choose. Edited by Wisbech Eagle (10 Sep 2019 7.48pm) Do you have the same opinion of anyone in the business world taking unilateral decisions which affect their employers finances?

Of course not. I am not defending bullying. Which Bercow has denied by the way, so we ought not judge him on that score just yet. I am putting that in the context of his bigger contribution to the functioning of our democracy. err dont most people accused of something deny it? Murderers, rapists, bank robbers etc

I suspect that in a few years time many of Bercow's current critics will be giving him great thanks for so stoutly defending the rights of Parliament against the Government. If and when we have a left leaning Labour government attempting to usurp Parliamentary democracy the principles established by Bercow will serve us well. He most certainly is biased. But he is biased in exactly the way a Speaker should be biased. He favours the rights of MPs, and Parliament as a whole, over the executive. As it is the established principle of the UK system that the executive only govern with the permission of Parliament, who are themselves empowered by the people, this is exactly what the Speaker's duty is. Bercow has done it extremely well. He is a hero who deserves, and I hope eventually gets, a statue outside of the Palace of Westminster. The timing, both of his intended departure and the announcement of it, was exquisite. It seemingly gives the current rabble in government no room to avoid a new Speaker who will follow a similar, if not identical, path to Bercow. Well done that man. It was highly instructive that at the end of his speech yesterday the whole of the House rose to give him, a Conservative MP, a standing ovation. All that is except the Conservatives. What have the Tories come to that they cannot recognise the really long term importance of the stand that he has made. Of course he has been criticised for his hectoring manner and accused of bullying his staff by opponents upset at his impact. None of that matters when the long view in taken. Bercow is someone whose place in history beckons and maybe in time more will understand why. Over the years I have read some b****cks on here but this takes the biscuit.
