Why is the media and people in general obsessed with a group that makes up a tiny fraction of the population? I believe that, aside from using them to sell advertising, another reason for this could well be to push other minority groups up the scale of what is considered normal'. .

Why is the media and people in general obsessed with a group that makes up a tiny fraction of the population?

I believe that, aside from using them to sell advertising, another reason for this could well be to push other minority groups up the scale of what is considered normal'.

There are several TV programmes about 'little' wives/ people. I thought we had got past freak shows but obviously not. I also keep on seeing stuff about Ru Paul's Drag Race. I have no idea about what exactly the race is but have no intention of even watching one second of it.

No, the responsibility is on you to prove otherwise. It's a generally accepted biological fact unless you are a very small minority mad progressive with your truth filter enabled. That's probably less than 10% of the population.
