They are armed with iron bars, petrol bombs and powerful slingshots firing marbles.

The marchers who protest peacefully are totally different and turn out in huge numbers.

The rioters probably number a couple of thousand

These brave souls attacked a building which was Police family
quarters and had a fine time throwing rocks and bricks through the lower windows while women and children took shelter under tables in their own homes. Didn't see that on Sky News

I'm sure many of the same people bemoaning the crackdown in Hong Kong will be the same people advocating for gun laws in the US and advocating for Socialism.

Try asking the Hong Kong protesters whether they would prefer to be armed with something more than an umbrella and what they think of socialism right now.

The Hong Kong population is overwhelmingly Han Chinese, so the Tibet comparison is completely wrong.

Since 1997 there has been considerable immigration from China into Hong Kong, mostly from Fukien province, who are also Han Chinese. These more recent arrivals are generally very pro Beijing and therefore support the Hong Kong government which does what Beijing tells it to as Hong Kong is and has been part of China since 1997.

The comparison with Tibet isn't perfect that's correct however it has parallels, which is why I used it.

I'm certainly not saying that Hong Kong isn't Chinese......The immigration has been deliberate precisely the same way it has been in Tibet....To create that divide and slowly turn the population.

It's a fact that Hong Kong is traditionally Cantonese and has its own traditions separate from the mainland.

Yeah sure most in Hong Kong are Han but they are Cantonese and the group who dominate the Chinese government in Belling are Han Mandarin...As you know, they are two subsets of Chinese.....To leave that out is not honest, it's like saying the Scots and English are the same....Yeah they are British but they are also different.

The 1997 agreement stated that there would be no change in the legal and political set up on the island with free elections and a free press agreed.

How's that gone then?

This is 2019 not 2049....what has happened to Hong Kong is nothing short of an pure abuse of those agreements.

One country, two systems eh.

Whatever happens between now and 2047, the treaty states that ,that is the date when " one country, two systems " comes to an end.

Sure, but this is 2019.....Why have Belling changed the system in Hong Kong so that whose on the island can only vote in pro Belling politicans. And the social credit system which means that any criticisms of the Han mandarin way of doing stuff ends up damaging you.

In most countries the response against the " protestors " would have been much more robust. We have fully tooled up groups with helmets, gas masks, iron bars, wheel barrows loads of bricks and petrol bombs attacking police.

Latest thing is to go into subway stations, intimidate the staff smash up ticketing machines and what ever they can find.

I'm sure that there has been violence and reactionary forces on the protest side.....However there has also been unnecessary violence by the authorities.

Dissidents have been disappearing for a long time in Hong Kong....we aren't seeing that on Sky News either.

This is now nothing to do with the proposed Extradition Bill which has been cancelled.

Only very recently....and only because the eyes of the world are on Hong Kong.

I have my suspicions that if China weren't bothered by reactions to another Tiananmen square and trade deals they would have the tanks in there already.

They can take the long view and keep disappearing dissidents and wear it down.

There was no democracy or self determination when Hong Kong was a Colony.

What I here of BBC and Sky News coverage is very biased.

? Yeah, that's because it was a colony. However, there were considerable freedoms.....and you didn't have riots on the streets under the British.

Get real....The Han Mandarin are going to replace the Cantonese culture in Hong Kong and that is deliberate policy.

It will become Han Mandarin and the Cantonese in Hong Kong are screwed.

Anybody that thinks China won't send in its own police dressed as protestors to incite violence and make the protests look violent has been reading Mao for too long.

Your opinions are welcome but your knowledge is somewhat askew.

No riots under British rule ? Please check the 1967 riots.

There were never any free elections promised in the agreement other than at a lower level in the government process. The high law making powers in the Executive are with a small number of people approved by Beijing.

Anyway, to draw a line, let’s both hope for more settled times in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Palace group has been unable to meet for last two games

I agree and certainly hope that the situation on the ground changes and that some sort of normalcy and peace can come.

I hope that Beijing change and can give them their system for another twenty five odd years and properly honour that agreement.....but we all know what's going to happen.

The weapons part from Sky News and local real time video reports,

The other sources are Apple Daily media which is an anti Govt media group funded by Mr Jimmy Lai, live video which we have every night on various feeds and people I know who live in the affected areas so to answer your question, no, state media is not my source

Good party members doing their jobs. They can get a nice apartment with cable TV and a flat screen that has been confiscated from one of the genuine protestors.

Best line comes from Sky News 'who would have dreamed we'd ever see live rounds used against protesters in Hong Kong?'

Pulitzer prize winning journalism.

Imagine the shock when the tanks roll in.

Indeed. It's going to become something of a horror show. I salute the resoluteness of the protestors, but there's a sad inevitability to it all.

I agree. It's been a couple of years since I was in the centre of HK but even then it struck me how much more the mainland influence could be felt.

I fail to see what the protesters hope to achieve, apart from some sympathy, which isn't going to pay any dividends at all. The west will not get involved. If they continue to push it then they will be crushed, with jail time and reeducation on the agenda. People will die.

If they really cannot hack it then they need to get out. Most are young, bright and educated people who would be welcomed in many countries.

What has that got to do with the ability to form a militia against a corrupt or tyrannical government?
