When Jimmy Mac managed the miss of the century PVA was waiting centre of goal for the square pass tap in. Benteke was beyond him. Not sure that this positional sense was meant to be in Hodgson's grand scheme of play.

Shocking defender.

Back in the day when full backs actually had to be sound defensively he might not have even been a pro footballer except if he was a winger.

We have shipped a lot, a LOT of goals on the back of PVA’s defensive inadequacies.

Trump lost. Badly. Hahahahahahaha.

I believe he started his career as a winger.

He has no business as a left back.

He could play on the wing in the championship and do fairly well.

When he's committed he can be a great defender, just ask Wilf when PVA played against him a few years back.

Unfortunately most of my memories of PVA are from Sunderland days when he showed no effort and Sunday was a prime example of this. How can you see your man in front of you and not make any effort to get goal-side.. it's lazy. It wasn't a fast counter attack, De Bryune had an age to pick out the pass.

One of the posters said it, he needs competition to bring the best out of him. We saw this when Allardyce brought in both him and Schlupp.

There's maybe 1 or 2 tops I would swap for PVA. I'd say for our level, he's a good player that has just had a season that has been below average but has also had a season and half for us that was good.

We want loyalty from our players, but we're very quick to turn on decent players. Can't have it both ways.

Hear hear !

Ah, but when did he score them? They were all late goals as my point suggested.

A perfect example of people getting carried away, there aren't many left back at our level (bottom half) that I would swap him for. We don't have anyone to compete with him either, Souare is done and Schlupp will be in midfield while Roy is here. Can't just leave ourselves exposed so have to have a very good replacement lined up.

Did you not start your career as a whinger?

Unscramble him and he's the chips

In summary a similar situation to Benteke then, though not as extreme. I think it makes sense to stick with them both and help them get their mojo back, as they sell for much anyway. At their best they both contribute plenty, easily the best sorts of players at what they do that we could hope to have. Roy did it with PVA before post Bristol City, he can do it again.

Both need decent competition from the beginning of next season.
