So you never had stuff falling off the back of lorries in your area? This has been happening since the dockyards were big business.

No market traders or happy go lucky characters who either didn’t have a job to ‘live’ or had stuff on plus collecting dole, with possibly lots of days spent in the pub or in and out of it, with some ‘business’ done there too?

There may not have been many people identical to Del boy or the other characters but there would’ve been plenty who shared some of his lifestyle and characteristics.

I thought John Sullivan grew up in South London and Del Boy was a composite of people he knew? I have certainly known lots of those characters in Lewisham. Never had a job always ducking and diving but never claimed benefits either, they just fly under the radar.

Mickey Pearce used to drink in my pub, well the actor who played him did.

There was only one writer, John Sullivan, who came from Balham and knew very well what he was writing about. Most of the well known stories from the series were based on real events.

i reckon London peaked (in terms of World importance) sometime between the 1840's Industrial Revolution and the end of WWI.

Bread was apparently a comedy. It fueled my skewed view of Liverpool as being a city of parasites.

Being a scally was a kind of accepted path to take in the ‘80s. But there was mass unemployment so that’s expected.

Never seen bread but it sounds pretty accurate...

The 'fall of London' has not come with bombs and the sound of tanks rolling into Trafalgar Square, it is a steady pervasive creep.

Britain as a whole will go the same way as immigrant populations outbreed us and slowly make more demands and dictate our politics to an increasing extent.

As I have said before. We are the Neanderthals in this scenario. It is about sheer numbers and the train of migrants will never stop.

It seems as if politicians have already surrendered to the certainty of the extinction of the European.
They have sold our future for personal gain.

Correct.

A family of 4 brothers at their mum’s family home who’d go out every day grafting for money by buying and selling stuff, also claiming benefits, and a cheap looking tarty sister whose only asset was her sex appeal, which I didn’t think she had.

Replace grafting for stealing and it's absolutely spot on.

I’ve lived my whole life in London, aside from 3 years at University, and I can’t see myself leaving any time soon; I still love it.

Can’t agree at all with the assessment that it’s ‘fallen’.

It’s interesting to read all this talk of how all these dangerous ghettos have formed - there are countless areas which are infinitely safer and more desirable than even 10 years ago; Brixton, Peckham, Lewisham, Elephant & Castle have all been gentrified beyond recognition, and appear to be continuing to do so.

Fair point.

If you accept that globalisation is inevitable then it certainly takes a lot of stress away.

I sympathise with those who mourn the loss of national identity but I still see this in abundance in big events - royal weddings. The ilymlics, Wimbledon... I could go on

I think the point is I never really understood what our national identity was in the first place anyway - we’re the best in the world at absorbing ideas into our culture, that seems to be what we do best. I’m not sure what you could really define ‘legacy’ Britishness as anyway. It is what it is. Don’t waste you life on bitterness

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.

Bitter? Talk about understatement.

Imagine going to Japan and saying, 'I never really understood what our national identity was in the first place anyway.'.....Sounds like something Justin Trudeau would say.

Ok, you may not care too much about anglo saxon culture in England but here's a taste of the country's roots.

Here's a video of the country around Churchill's funeral for a picture of what this country should have protected....again, as have other countries.

Here's a connection to the anglo saxon past.

A tradition that was maintained for centuries and still is....but the feckless and people confused about the value of their identity will ensure is eventually lost.
