Whilst working in Southampton a few years ago I was told that Palace and Saints were fierce rivals in the 50s. Not sure why but maybe someone on here knows
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong |

Ah, but we are talking supporters here. How can you be arrogant if you 'support' a team of which you knew little until 'deciding' to support due to their success. If you went through the mill when times were tough, then fine. Most current fans had nothing to do with the success so have no right to be arrogant. Thank you well said. I will also argue that when I refer to Arsenal and Tottenham fans as unjustifiably arrogant I am referring to the fact they simply believe they are better then most and deserve to win things, despite not really doing so. I don't actually expect much of Palace out of the context of the status quo, as long as we stay in existence I'll be happy. Cannot say I'd reckon the same about Tottenham and Arsenal fans however. Slightly confused that I am defending myself as a Palace fan on this forum however!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

my irrational dislike of tottingham and spammers, is bourne of 2 things, other than being homeless London clubs. 1. They have passionate fans, who live up to the Danny Dyer stereotype 2. For 'big' clubs, they have won bvgger all for ages
I disengage, I turn the page. |

Similar to Part Time James, because of where I live the rivalry is still there. In fact since moving from Hove it's got worse as there seem to be more Weed fans in Shoreham. Example - I was in a local pub with my mate who is also a Palace fan, discussing what a ball ache it is to get to and from the Amex. Our conversation was overheard by a guy that introduced himself as a BHA supporter. To be fair he wasn't the usual delusional type you usually come across, but he did take pride in calling his kids over, boy and girl, and asked them who they hated. '' Palace '' they both replied...estimated ages 12 and 10. Excellent, they'll sue when they're old enough.

It’s a strange one really, I see younger fans from both sides claiming to hate us or we hate them, why? They weren’t even born when it was rife in the 70’s/early 80’s It’s because it’s the done thing!! Football fans have to have a rival, someone to hate. I hate Brighton, but not this Brighton, the Brighton of the late 70’s/early 80’s horrible nasty pieces of s*** on the pitch like Brian Horton, Steve Foster and Peter Ward. Travelling down to the goldstone two Christmas’s on the trot to see us get beat, them beating us 0-3 at selhurst when we went down!! That C*** Mullery. Proper mass brawls, that as a kid and a coward I had to run the gauntlet and try to avoid. This Brighton I couldn’t care less about really, I want them to lose and I want them to go down, but only because I’m a palace fan, therefore I have to hate Brighton. Spot f***ing on i HATE those c***s with every last breath in my body, i despise everything they are and stand for in todays pasturised, snowflake easily offended society...their faux superiority means nothing would give me more pleasure then to see them rot. This was only fuelled further at the away game last season! Edited by Lyons550 (12 Feb 2019 3.28pm)

What irks me, is I never hear a Brighton fan mock their own club. I don't mean deliberately try to disadvantage their team with poor support, I mean just concede during a bit of banter now and then that they've had a bad day or are in a bad league position. I love football banter. I make jokes about Palace to Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal etc fans and they usually have some quip about their own team. It's nice, it's two way, it's a laugh. Brighton fans (and I am friends with a lot...sorry) never budge an inch. If I made some joke about Palace not scoring at home since 2015 they don't have some similar friendly Brighton banter, they'll make another joke about Palace. It's rubbish. Generally speaking I have an appreciation for fans of most clubs, even clubs I don't like, because like me they are just people that go to a game to watch their team and often have to make a long journey home on the back of a defeat. But Brighton fans are a different breed. As I say, I have a lot of Brighton fan friends down this neck of the woods, and engaging them on most other subjects (other than the Green Party, vegan footwear or #metoo) is generally no different to talking to any other person. But I'd just love one of them to one day come up with some decent banter about football. It's been a long wait.

I am resident on the coast a 30 min train ride from Brighton station.I occasionally see a Brighton supporter or two if I visit some non-league games in Sussex and the odd shirt or car sticker but overall there is no great evidence of an outpouring of support for the club. I know more Palace supporters in my village and surrounds than those who support Brighton and those 'Seagulls' supporters who know me don't engage in any banter or anti-Palace rhetoric.Perhaps they have concluded that I would take a couple of coats of varnish off them !

How can you not hate them - historically or now? In the past they were deluded c***s who thought they could rival Palace - they generally couldn't. Now they think they are worthy rivals - they aren't. They are incredibly dirty and direct (hoofball) currently. I reckon Hughton is incredibly over-rated. Our manager is twice his age but our football is light-years ahead of theirs. We have to beat them - end of.
