If it's just for the money alone then no way should we sell him. If, on the other hand, we have a deal in place for a goalscorer and need the money to proceed then I'll drive PVA to the airport myself.

I've grown to like him due to his energy and enthusiasm, but fundamentally he remains very average at his principal job, which is defending. We have Schlupp, Riedewald and Souare to replace him with.

Thanks TheBigToePunt for putting so succinctly in just three words why it would be madness to sell.

Good job. It negates the need to look elsewhere on this thread.

Suspect the person who started this rumour is more likely glueless.

Are you sure you have thought this through?

If you look at what PVA brings to the side, his greatest attribute is intercepting the ball and instigating quick attacks. His downside and I think it is s big downside is that he gets caught out of position way too often and often leaves his man totally unmarked. If you were to weigh up his contribution to the team in terms of goals created and scored, to goals scored by the opposition attacking down his flank I think you will find his stats are not that great. If you consider our alternatives without a January purchase then you have the 3 you were so quick to criticise and dismiss.

Souare is a very similar player to PVA or was before his accident, he is quick, likes to get forward but at his best I would say he was probably better than PVA defensively, but worse going forward. Whether he ever returns to his best we are unable to say,

Schlupp is quick, sticks to his task when he plays at fullback and worries me far less than PVA when the opposition have a decent right winger.

Reidewald, as with both Souare and Schlupp is a natural left footer, reads the game well and can pass. He can defend as well as his natural position is defensive midfielder. So, we have 3 players who can step into that position which means it is covered better than any other position on the pitch.

Whilst I don’t necessarily want to sell PVA, I think that if we want to spend big money this window and have to sell to buy then we would be foolish to not accept a big money offer. Personally if we got £25m for him I would offer that straight to Chelsea for RLC. I would then wait until the summer to find the correct replacement left back as we can survive the season in that position with who we have.

Sell PVA for 25m.

This is an absolute no brainer.

He is a left back, and hasnt been any good coming forward this year. Schlupp could easily do a job at left back, with Pape covering. PVA is hardly irreplaceable.

That 25m could go direct towards a striker, plus the wages.

I would even deal at 17.5 ish.

Trump lost. Badly. Hahahahahahaha.

We would be asking Schlupp to take over.

Did my eyes deceive me or was Schluppy badly at fault for not covering the run and allowing Gundogan a clear, unconnected header into the net? I do believe that he even pointed to Mama, as if to say "why weren't you on him?" when the centre half was covering another player. Poor play?

Then, he allowed De Bruyne to cross without challenge (bar a leg in the air like a dog at a lampost) for the second goal.

Not wanting to piss on our wonderful Etihad chips, but it's food for thought when considering our left back options.

Originally posted by Bangell However, I think our transfer policy should be to keep every decent player we have, because our recruitment is so crap that we've got to keep hold of the good acquisitions, and we can't rely on our ability to replace anyone that we sell.

This.

No way we should sell any player, unless they are totally worthless, because we have no ability to acquire talent. (Sorloth, Ayew, etc.)

You have to assume that anyone we sell, no matter the price, will be replaced by someone much much worse.

I would let him go for £30 M. Not a penny less. He’s way too good to sell

Time for the twice-yearly floccinaucinihilipilification of Jordan Mutch, I think.
