Because, sadly AQG2 the job aren't the slightest bit interested in the attributes you have described above... They have simply looked at how much I earn and know that they can replace me with someone brand new for half of my annual wage!!

I've been a member here since 2005.. The vast majority I think, on here know that I'm old bill... Some may remember about 2 and a half years ago I had a very bad car accident, which after 6 weeks in hospital and 5 operations later has left me unable to ever run again...

Well yesterday I was informed by the Metropolitan Police that after 18 years service they are going to medically retire me with my last working day being the 4th January 2019...

I'm 40 and have no f***ing idea what to do!!... Can anyone give me a job???!!

Sorry to hear this, do you get a pension or lump sum? I'm just wondering what type of income you'd need?

I can put you in touch with some contract agencies for office work - the contracts range from weeks to months so if you're happy/unhappy in the role you please yourself.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I don't post on here much but thought I'd chip in as your skill set could be well suited to a career in corporate investigations.

My firm often uses these guys when we're looking to track someone down, do some surveillance, identify assets, that kind of thing. I know a lot of these investigators are ex-coppers although I don't know exactly what their police background is.

It's not shift work but the hours can be a bit anti-social but hey, welcome to the private sector.

Firstly Kenny; many many thanks for your service! At 40 the world is still very much your oyster; so dont dispair.

I play footie for the Met at The Warren and so many of them who have left have gone on to do other things, some even going back as 'consultants' training or advising...have you ever considered that route?

Either way, my advice would be take a few months off, play golf or something to keep you active and then think about retraining / course /studying if you can.

That would not be my recommendation from a strict employability perspective.

Move straight into whatever you can get, work for B&Q or something. You can't afford a gap in your CV.

When you are in work, then look to start stepping up the ladder. I do think studying could be good, gives you a rationale for having a relatively basic job - if that is what you end up with - because you need the time for study.

Just don't look like someone that fell out of the system for a while, it will make you appear to be a risk to any potential employer. They like predictability and reliability. Anyone that has had a single track job for a long time already represents a concern - can they transition into a different world. Don't feed those fears.

Hope this helps.
