I don't want to be a prick, but you're a fine one to talk with the absolute shower of s***e you usually recommend. You've got a post on this board recommending players from the second tier of German football ffs. Solanke is highly rated by Jurgen Klopp, one of the best managers in the world. He is being groomed to fight for his place in one of the most attacking teams in the world. And you don't think he'd be worth a punt over Alex Sorloth or Jordan Ayew? Hudson-Odoi has played for Chelsea a couple of times this season and looked dangerous, scored on his Europa League debut and would give us a different option on the wings. Obviously if we had money to spend perhaps we could find some better options but the fact is, we don't and these are realistic targets that would cost barely nothing.
I remember the days when Nathan Delfounesco was highly rated and playing for the England U21s. Never mind the Benik Afobes or Chuba Akpoms. Thinking Solanke will be better than those is unrealistic at this point. He may or may not. Often these players don't have the same percentage of goals in low level clubs because they don't have the same service. Look at Iheanacho. He had the best goals to minutes played ration in Machester City. Andat Leicester? Ben Woodburn was way more rated than Hudson Odoi and he still ended up not playing in the Championship. I reccommended players who are staples in the German second division. With a youngster you don't know what you're buying. He could or could not make it at high level. I do think youngsters need to be promoted more, but I wouldn't go for ones costing more than 30 million just because they come from Chelsea or Liverpool. And loans are not good if you can't keep the player for good Edited by mattteo (12 Dec 2018 10.59am)

You make no sense at all. At no point have I suggested spending £30m on either Solanke or Hudson-Odoi, so that point is irrelevent. There is nothing wrong with using loans in January - especially if you have no money to spend. January is where everyone gets ripped off on transfers (as we know too well) so loans are actually better.

There is nothing wrong with using loans in January - especially if you have no money to spend. January is where everyone gets ripped off on transfers (as we know too well) so loans are actually better. There is everything wrong because you get your squad accustomed to playing with that striker for the next 6 months and then you won't have him at all for the next season. That's disruptive, doesn't let you build a long term tactic, doesn't gain you any money. Now, instead of having a loanee those 6 months, what if you have a striker who is your own, manages to score goals and increases his value? All those surpluss million go to you, not to some other club. So, unless there is a buy-option, loans are a pretty bad move, unless you're loaning players of internationally recognized value, like Hazard (which clubs are never gonna loan). Getting Hudson Odoi on loan just until the summer would be good for HIS development. But with him getting more and more minutes, players in the same position, like Townsend, would be getting less. And in the summer, when you want to sell Townsend, you'd be getting 4-5 million less than what you'd be getting if he played. But if you bring in a winger for around 5 million, like I suggested, and field him with the same probable moderate success Hudson Odoi could have, he'd be adding millions for your club at his value. I don't know why you don't understand what I said about a lower division. I suggest you read my detailed post again and it will make sense to you. Also, claiming with that certainty that the Championship is better than the German 2.Bundesliga is not really something which can be proven, but as the top leagues of the countries are at around a similar level, I think we can safely assume the same about their second divisions.

Not sure I agree with the negative view towards loaning players. I see your point about getting players you own, the security and potential future investment. But there is a time for that - the summer. I suppose the only fear with loanees is we have awful luck with them (except RLC). We are in the middle of the season and if we only double our tally we WILL go down, there’s no doubt about that. In January we should be acquiring the players best suited to maintain our status, end of story. Then in the summer we can see about better long term solutions.

Yeah, ok, there's nothing wrong with loaning an accomplished player like Fernando Llorente or Kagawa, who big clubs in Europe may agree to loan out, to save yourself from relegation. There are a lot of things wrong though with loaning juniors like Solanke or Hudson Odoi. I have nothing against them and they may even become good PL players and I'll sound stupid for not having wanted them, but get them only of you can buy them for a decent sum. As long as these youngsters are coming from Liverpool or Chelsea, they're bot going to cost a DECENT sum. What would they do on loan for Palace? How good? Maybe as decent as Kenedy does for Newcastle. I sincerely doubt Solanke could pull off even what Tammy Abraham pulled off for Swansea in the Premier League, which is a goal roughly every 200 minutes. In fact, Abraham would have been the more logical choice of buying a young, well-built, agile striker at the start of the season. He had the great numbers in the Championship, which is just 1 step behind the PL. Solanke has good numbers at youth level, a lot lower a level. He hasn't even played in the Championship yet. If this is the intention- to be saved from relegation- then these loanees won't do it either. I asked before- "how many goals have Solanke, Hudson Odoi and Moses scored together in the Premier League the last 2 years?" Edited by mattteo (12 Dec 2018 10.57am)

I have to agree with matteo, bringing in an unproven youngster to solve our attacking woes is a big risk. I'm not sure it would be fair on the player(s) either as fans would quickly turn on them if they don't produce. The summer was the time to play that card, now we should turn to more experienced options, even if only as a short-term fix.
