Keeping is not remotely easy, but the best keepers have a confidence and conviction that I don't see yet in Wayne. I like the way he has tried to improve his game, but he is still work in progress IMO

With every miss, Benteke is digging himself a bigger and bigger hole of low confidence to get out of. Macca and AWB were solid, as was Hennessey, but Schlupp and Ayew didn't do enough. I think we should line up like this v Huddersfield Hennessey Hard to disagree. Benteke for sub and to give him time in Reserves & 'B- string' Cup team. Palace needs to regroup especially up front with desperate need to rack up wins against opposition whom we should be beating. Southampton yesterday was one helluva warning shot to both The Eagles. (Shane Long transfer request in January?)

I think most of us felt a slight sinking feeling when we arrived at the match to find the Blessed Saint Wilfred would not be appearing. Thoughts of those statistics from last season and not winning without him immediately sprang to mind. The question is, does not only affect the confidence of the fans when he is out, but also the mentality of the other players? I hope not, but perhaps there is a little lurking nag in the back of their minds that they are being sent into battle with a shortage of ammunition. It is certainly worrying though that we currently seem so dependent on one player to be fit. I think that's right, Pete. The Palace players seem to depend too much on Wilf, and Roy's tetchiness at the press conference on Friday seems to suggest that he feels that way too. One bad tackle and heaven forfend Wilf could be out for the season. Roy has to develop a plan B and a different mindset in the players. It would also help if he picked players like Meyer who can hold onto the ball and use it creatively. The first half yesterday was defend deep and hit and hope.

In hindsight might it have have been better to rate Wilf as doubtful at the press conference. The news at 2 o'clock deflated everyone the same way as Roy was at the press conference. But giving everyone 24 hours to let the news sink in we may have got over the disappointment and had time to rally everyone into a more underdog / togetherness mentality. As it was it seems everyone was deflated form the first kick.

Completely agreed - we need to begin to win without Wilf. The problem is, you take out Wilf, and who do we have that can actually win us games, score, be a danger, create assists? We literally are a one-man team. I think we miss Cabaye much more then we realise. It's time for Ayew to start, and then Bentecke to be dropped. I'm not sure Sorloth will ever come good - I've been watching Palace long enough to see a punt on a player workout, and Sorloth looks miles away right now. That said, never say never and I hope to be proved wrong. What a disappointing start to the season after a convincing first game. A few more losses and we'll all be in panic mode. Roy needs to make some bold choices - drop Bentecke, and start Meyer/Kouyate/Ayew. We need 1 other player who provides an outlet. Looking back, Bolassie used to fill that role. He would terrorise fullbacks and had that ability to get the crowd excted - even though he wasn't the same calibre as Wilf, but that gave us so much more going forward having both of them in the team. I'm sorry but Townsend doesn't really cut the mustard. He's a good crosser of the ball, but most of the time he seems to be falling a bit short. Compare him to a Walcott type player who will score every other week. A Walcott/Richarlison level player is what we need. We don't have that. We rely on ONE player for everything and the team is bog-standard outside of that. We just don't have enough talent. The three new players look like they do have talent + AWB. But the rest of the team look a bit slow and heavy on the touch to be honest.

As somebody mentioned in the matchday thread at halftime without Wilf one possibility is to put AWB on the wing and Ward behind. He seems one of the only players willing/able to move forward. Meyer should of also started in the midfield as nothing was coming through there as well. The starting eleven looked like we were playing Liverpool not Southampton and consequently we conceded about 70% possession at the start and only looked lively in the final 20 mins or so due to late subs, another issue in the game. By the way WH prevented an avalanche, even Luka fancied one !!

I think AWB on the wing with Ward behind him is a very good idea. He started as a winger after all. It must be right too, as my wife made the suggestion at half-time yesterday!!!! Don't forget too, that we played our first season back in the Prem without Wilf. I think some players need to step up to the plate, and make a name for themselves. We need to find a bit of the spirit we had with Damo, Jedi and the like.

Townsend and Schlupp should be consigned to the bench along with Benteke
