no 'stop and search' = no risk of getting caught carrying a big knife.

so what frightens the London yoof ? another yoof with a knife or a Copper with a notebook ?

Not comparable.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Heard of knife crime?

Stopping someone and frisking him/her for weapons is hardly the same as accessing a database, is it?

Yeah I’m not sure why you need effectively a card reader and database info coming through.

Is it just the UK and Ireland of the EU countries that doesn't issue mandatory ID cards?

I'm talking of random checks and if that random check highlights and individual is envolved in gang knife crime, then frisk the b******

Stop and search is about police on the streets being more proactive and searching people they believe are acting 'suspiciously', like they always used to. It's got zero to do with ID cards.

Living in Spain were ID cards are the norm, I'm glad the English haven't adopted the system.
Not only is it open to ID theft.
You have to show it to nearly every one - from Old bill to buying a mobile phone.
It's a very good way of the gvt keeping tabs on you, what you've done, where you been etc..
I don't buy the argument "if you got nothing to hide".
If you've got nothing to hide ban curtains from houses.

Without an id card your whereabouts are known anyway if you have a mobile phone and it's switched on, which is the case for nearly everyone. Whenever you move from cell to cell, which are quite small today, a record is generated and stored with location data. Not many know about that and think if they don't make a call, their location is unknown, which is false.

Nowadays with technology,it's true your whereabouts are known. I was more talking about before that and when mobile phones weren't smart.

Suspiciously !! Ahh ok so that's how I know if someone has a knife.

Or maybe just random I'D checks which would be the law to provide apon being asked by the police.
This would be fair to all especially black kids who think they are targeted. Once the check has taken place and the police have assatained the person is going about their law abiding day they are free to go on their way.
If however they see from the checks the guy is a known drug dealer relevant questions can be asked like police should do. Are you carrying anything you shouldn't be? We are going to check!!

The article originally posted was about introducing id cards, so it's the future not the past and full of mobile phones giving away nearly everyones location 24hrs a day unless you switch it off. How many switch their phones off? - virtually no one.
